Over 500 illegal striped bass seized from alleged poachers on the Bayshore

Striped bass poaching is apparently rampant on the Raritan Bayshore, judging by a December report from the Bureau of Law Enforcement to the Fish and Game Council.

Conservation officers responding to poaching complaints issued more than 200 summonses to anglers for the illegal harvest of striped bass from late November through December on the Bayshore.

The overwhelming number of violations occurred between Perth Amboy and Union Beach.

Most of the summonses issued were for undersize fish, however, many individuals possessed double digit numbers of fish. Anglers are permitted one stripped bass from 28 to less than 38 inches in length.

Additional summonses issued included possessing oversized, and mutilated, striped bass as well as failure to obtain a saltwater registry, interfering with officers and littering while fishing.

More than 500 illegal striped bass were seized from fishermen found in violation. Some of the seized fish were donated to food banks while others were submitted to Marine Fisheries for the collection of biological data.

The fine for possession of undersized or overlimit striped bass is $100 per fish plus court costs. The cases are typically heard in municipal courts in the town where the violation occurred.
