OK Fluking

Looks like a repeat of last summer with a slow fluke bite. Launched my boat at Wantagh Park around 5:45 AM expecting not many boats on the water because it was mid week. Found out later in the day it was a holiday. You don't pay attention to time, dates, holidays when you're retired. All of a sudden there's boats coming every which way like it was a weekend.
Started fishing about 20 minutes later on the East Side of the Meadowbrook Bridge when it was at or near the end of high tide. Weird tide with the wind, didn't seem like a nice drift at all. Caught 1 short fluke there. Then I sailed over to Jones Inlet and tried there. By that time the tide was starting to go out but the wind kind of messed up the drift again. It was 5-10 from the SW, it always seems like it's blowing harder than it was forecast. The Fluke in Jones Inlet seemed more aggressive and I caught 4 shorts there fishing 2 hours with 2 small dogfish. No Sea Robins.
Decided to head back to Wantagh and stop along the way and fish. Saw a nice fleet of boats fishing the NW side of the Meadowbrook and figured I'd give it a try . Normally I avoid fishing there because I lose a bunch of rigs there. Decided to take one drift right at the bridge and drift back. 15 seconds later I get snagged and lost a rig. I cursed and got out of there as quick as I could. So disappointed I can't fish there anymore, had great fluking there over the years. Too many underwater cables they don't warn you about and other stuff on the bottom. Probably the skin divers find 20 anchors there every year.
Used squid and smelt I bought last fall. Used a pink teaser /high low rig. Jigged it a little , no Fluke took the bucktail. I'm looking closely at the Striped Bass reports and I might go for them next time out of Jones Inlet. Heard they caught some Black Drum and Redfish fishing near the bunker schools. Just like that it's almost time to troll for Bonito,Bluefish and Spanish mackerel again. The best fishing reports come from Combs bait and Tackle, Bill Whitchy always has a lot to say.
Just glad being out there again, my engine was leaking lower unit oil all over at the boat ramp . Took it back to the mechanic and they said a gasket was put on wrong and it leaked there. No more. Got a scare at the boat ramp, I was taking my 25 Foot Panga boat out of the water pulling it out with a front wheel drive minivan. For some reason it wasn't getting good traction and the wheels spun. Probably launched there 40 times and only 2 times the wheels spun and couldn't get traction. Normally it comes out with hardly any effort , maybe another guys lower unit was leaking oil. After a few seconds it came right out no problem.

Quite the adventure!

Hint#1: Fish the backbays with 1/2-1oz leadhead tipped with spearing or smelt.

Hint #2: Find a new mechanic!
I just might do that and start fishing with white bucktails again. I'm new to the Wantagh Park area because I launch there now and don't really know the hotspots there like I knew in the Freeport Area fishing there almost 50 plus years. Re: the Mechanic, they put the gasket on wrong and it folded over causing the leak. They were good guys and fixed it for free even a year and a half later after the repair.
