Omega Protein now has the birders on the warpath

This might be the best thing to happen to save menhaden, even though ASMFC says they're not overfished.

Other states need to regulate them them just like NY. I went toe to toe with Omega and won. It's tough to stop a fishery but you can regulate it to death.

Also Mr. Landry pointed to striped bass as an example of a fish that was “critically depleted” in the Atlantic waters for reasons other than its food source, attributing the problem to “excessive” recreational fishing that should be curbed by emergency regulations.

So, that wasn't caused by depletion of their forage species ?

"I had the same thought! But then, Tina Berger pointed out the weakfish, which is entirely unrelated. They are extracting a staggering 244 MILLION bunker from the Chesapeake to use as cat meal and fertilizers. Even worse, the ASMFC has permitted the total removal of 1.2 BILLION menhaden from the Atlantic coast. Such a massive reduction is undeniably disastrous for the environment.

Is there anyone on this planet who fails to grasp that the era of reduction boats should be long gone? Instead, we must focus on adding and replenishing the resources we've depleted."

Most of the rest of the world don't look at the way we do. When they deplete their fish they go further offshore or worst go to other country's for their fish illegal or not. In fact i look at it as none of them give a dam about us. Everyone is out for himself and will cut your throat so he can fish more. It's all about the money.
