Peconic Run

Me and my son headed to Peconic today. Left later than I wanted to this morning because of the Shinnecock Locks schedule. When I checked in with the locks peeps yesterday they told me they would be closing about 9:30 am today. That means when I would have wanted to be there at 6 -6:30 they would be wide open and the water screaming and I didn't want to deal with that. So we left our dock about 7:30 and by time we hit the canal around 8 the locks were still open but the water was slowed down and manageable.
Made it through and lines in the water by 8:30am. First drift 3 nice porgies and a weakfish in the box. Next drift 2 more nice porgies. After that wind and tide died out and it was slow pickings but we managed a bunch more for the box. Threw back a bunch of smaller keepers. Moved around to all my spots but same thing everywhere. Didn't venture east of Jessups as my son is meeting friends tonight and wanted back to the dock by mid afternoon. He got a gorilla blue that I'm guessing was in the 8-10lb range on a lightweight porgy rod with a 2/0 hook that gave him a 5-10 minute fight and peeled the reel a few times and lots of laughs. Back in the water went that thing LOL.
Safe and successful trip back and forth through the locks, boat ran great, beautiful weather, a couple of nice sandwiches, and time with my son!! A great day overall (y) (y)
