Penn 4400 SS No non reverse

I have other reels but have had this one for years and wonder if it is worth repairing. You tube seems to indicate that there is a "dog" on one part that when the non-reverse lever is used it stops the handle/crank from back reeling. I didn't think the reel got so much work that it wore that part out but I suppose its possible. Approximate cost for repair at Causeway or other good shops vs. just replacing the reel if so inclined ?

If you have basic mechanical skills, it's not that hard to repair a reel. They're not a Quadrajet.

The parts breakdowns are available online and YouBoob will always have tutorials. Also search Alan Tani. He did a lot of reel rebuild videos. I don't know if he's still active, but I'm sure the videos are around.

Motor skills and hand/eye not what they were. Can no longer make wooden sailing ship models and must stick with modern warships. More interested in the cost of the likely part and repair at a shop.

Got it. It's been a while since I've had a reel repaired by a shop. I miss Sea-Isle. They were always fast and affordable.

I still can't picture a repair being close to the price of a new reel. I guess you could always ask them to guestimate it.

Pete, you worked on an Abu Garcia 5600AB of mine years ago. Worked as it was supposed to until…. I ended up getting Abu Garcia to exchange even steven for their “normal” reels and actually acknowledge that those ‘AntiBacklash’k reels were for “new anglers” to baitcasting reels. Soon they were permanently off the market. Anyway, according to Youboob research, the reel needs a part that wears out, called a dog in the videos. My limited dexterity and knowledge couldn’t get to said part, but it does seem youtube is spot on. I will do some research with Penn parts and see what is what. Regardless I sincerely thank you, once again, for another gracious offer ( and to Avenger too !! ) but it will be a project for after Thanksgiving when most tackle is getting put away.

I miss Sea Isle too as they were my go to for reel repair, rod building, and many other fishing related needs. On a guess, Rob probably built over 40 rods for me over the years.

Don't ask me why but I just ordered a part called a dog from fishermensheadquarters.com. and a kayak net from Amazon lol. The net I needed.

You probably could have just picked it up at Causeway. Anyway be mindful that your issue could be more than just the dog. It might also be the engaging spring or the tooth-ed anti-reverse wheel that the dog grabs against as well. When you take off the rotor, you will know.
