Roach?

As a kid.......I remember roaches in Avon manor Pond in Amtyiville. I also remember setting out night lines and catching snapping turtles to 45 lbs. I would bet roaches are gone but those turtles ar likely still there. Way back then, some guy used to come around at night and gaff the turtles near the shore, shoot them in the head with a .22 and take them to sell. I had one turtle bite a broomstick handle in half on me once. They are so incredibly nasty. Turtles are also in Twin Ponds in Centerport
Those snapping turtles are nothing to mess with. So the question remains, why would a fish that was so numerous, just completely die out, while other species did not?

well, they could still be there in Avon manor pond but I have not fished in in 45 years!! But you do raise a very valid question. Just like why are blackfish in Long Island Sound o small when the ones in Rhode Island and NJ so big?

Where is "here"??
I grew up fishing Southards pond. 40 years ago I remember people catching them and calling them roaches ,They would catch them in the creek pool then use them for bait in lake to catch bass and pickerel. Type of shiner is my guess

Question . . . is there any way I could get my car down to Southard's? I am somewhat disabled and have a problem walking long distances.
