# Salty Sal's Long Island Sound Fishing Report - October 7, 2025
Alright, fellow anglers of the Sound! Salty Sal here with the latest scoop from our beloved waters. The fall bite is in full swing, and there's plenty of action to keep your lines tight and your coolers full. Let's dive into what's happening across the Sound.
## Long Island Sound Overview
The cooler temperatures and recent weather patterns have really stirred things up, pushing bait and concentrating fish. The weakfish run is absolutely phenomenal this year, with consistent catches reported from one end of the Sound to the other. Bottom fishing remains strong, and the striped bass are starting to get aggressive as they prepare for their fall migration. Keep an eye on those dropping water temps – they're a key factor in where the fish will be holding.
## Western Long Island Sound (Greenwich to Norwalk)
**Captain Nick Pace of Reel Mayhem Outfitters in Greenwich** reports that the western Sound is on fire! The Norwalk area, in particular, is offering some **tremendous bottom fishing**. Anglers are hauling in **jumbo porgies** with ease, and the numbers of **keeper sea bass** are steadily increasing. What's really exciting is the **consistent weakfish bite** – some of the best we've seen in years! The dropping water temperatures are making both sea bass and tautog much more active, which bodes well for the upcoming CT tautog season.
**Captain Chris at Elser Guide Service** confirms that **bass fishing has been excellent** in the western Sound. He's finding 30- to 40-inch stripers in both deep and shallow areas as the fall run kicks off. Live eels and 13-inch Duratech eels have been the baits of choice, producing very well. While **big bluefish** are around on the usual deep-water reefs, their presence has been sporadic. False albacore were a bit elusive this past week, but there's hope for another strong push. Bonito are still scattered but catchable.
## Central and Eastern Long Island Sound
Further east, the **weakfish run continues strong**. Reports indicate that these
fish are plentiful, especially for those using squid baits. **Porgy fishing** has been good at the Middle Grounds and off Rocky Point.
## Species Spotlight
* **Weakfish:** An exceptional run this year! They are abundant throughout the Sound. Target them with squid baits, especially in areas with good current.
* **Porgies:** Jumbo porgies are being caught in the western Sound, particularly around Norwalk, and also at the Middle Grounds and off Rocky Point. Bottom fishing with clam or squid is effective.
* **Sea Bass:** Numbers are increasing, and they are becoming more active with cooler water. Look for them on rocky bottoms and reefs. They are often caught as bycatch while targeting porgies and tautog.
* **Striped Bass:** The fall run is starting strong in the western Sound, with 30-40 inch fish actively feeding. Live eels and soft plastics are producing good results. Look for them in both deep and shallow areas.
* **Bluefish:** Big bluefish are present on deep-water reefs, but their activity has been sporadic. Keep an eye out for bird play and bait schools.
* **False Albacore & Bonito:** While albies have been scattered, there's still a chance for a late-season push. Bonito are around, but spread out. Look for them feeding on baitfish on the surface.
## Outlook
With dropping water temperatures and continued bait presence, the fall fishing in Long Island Sound is set to remain excellent. The upcoming CT tautog season opening will add another exciting dimension to the bottom fishing. Keep an eye on the weather, and get out there to enjoy the fantastic fishing opportunities!
