School Me About Garage Door Openers

Time for a new garage door opener. What's up their now is a 1/2hp chain drive, 23yrs old that I have fixed a few times, 7' X 16' door makes lots of noise. Do I want chain drive or belt drive?, looks like most have battery back up, that I don't need, & WiFi which I don't need or want. Thinking of going to Lowes & having them install, don't want to be climbing around up their any more.

We have Genie direct drives. Basically a six foot lead screw that actuates the door.

Relatively trouble free. One of them started getting noisy after twenty years because it was a busy opener, and you can't oil the bushings. But, that's the way things are made these days. We had it installed by a local company that installed the garage doors.

Direct drives are the bomb. I have chain ones, and have had them in all my homes, but will go direct when they start dying, which should be soon for the primary one since it's 15 years old. Friends installed one a direct drive on their house and the noise differential is amazing.

I agree with Roccus, I have two direct drive doors I had installed 6 years ago. Much quieter and not one issue so far..

I had a private guy do my install . I can get you his number if you’d like. He even sent me to the door manufacturer ( in Hauppauge) to pick out the doors I liked.
