Switchblade knife

Yes, they are illegal in NY unless in the possession of active duty military, LEO or a person engaged in hunting OR FISHING. Last week after spotting the little pod of dolphins again in the backbay, and then a dorsal fin that did not look like that of a porpoise or dolphin, my livelined snapper was taken by something that gave my yak and I a bit of a ride once I tightened down on the drag. I have caught large rays but the speed and slashing nature of this animal's fight was nothing like that. After a few minutes and retrieving 50 or 60 yards of line, whatever this monster was let go, and I got back my hook and leader. Had I not gotten lucky I would have wanted to cut the line as near to the leader as possible, but realized that the folder in my PFD would be useless as would the several folding knives I have with that little thumb button to assist its opening, since they invariably get "gummed up" and difficult to open one-handed. I then realized that I still had a clunky but useable switchblade that had been my father's and had to be at least 70 or 80 years old as he died in 1957. I now carry it in my PFD but how and where would I replace it with another auto knife ? Do gun shops carry them ?

Could have been the same one I suppose. I was perhaps 7 miles from the piers, north and east, when I saw the dorsal. A friend felt that based on my estimate of the dorsal size, the shark would have been 6 or 7 feet long.
But back to the knife. Anyone ?

I think in Newyorkistan it can only be a face to face sale, but where? and the ones I saw on the internet cost more than a week's worth of Bidenomic groceries !

Got a tip from a shooting website I am active with that The Bladesman in Wantagh across from Cedar Creek Park has them. A mom and pop, nice Facebook page, and convenient for me as well. Thinking I just need to show my hunting /fishing license.

Why do I suddenly think that many herein will be interested, lol ?

What about a machete?? That would handle the job at hand.

such a surprise, lol.
Anyway, between a couple of referrals to a hardware store in Plainview, The Bladesman in Bellmore, knifeworks.com, and my local gun shop in Seaford I just have to narrow the choices down a bit. Making it both readily accessible yet resistant to the ravages of saltwater spray (I am on a sit on top yak after all) will be the only challenge. I really don't need it at all for deer hunting, fixed blade and folders do nicely for that after all, but the next time Jaws steals a snapper...

If your truly concerned about having to cut your line in an emergency, forget the switchblade (it'll rust and not work when you need it to) and get yourself one of these. Always had one when I worked deck.

Without breaking the bank I ended up ordering an orange handled Boker switchblade from Cutlery Shoppe. Most of the other knife websites did not sell out of state except to authorized military and government buyers. CS just advises that one must recognize local and state laws. No sales tax, free and quick shipping, three lollipops (really !), good customer service and a nice nylon and zippered case.

Or you can try what I carry - a Buck 364BKS Rival 3.5" blade. Not a switchblade, but still a one-hand quick opener, using your thumb on the little stud at the base of the blade to flick it open. Less than $30 and made in USA. I'm pretty sure it was Roger/Buddha162 that referred this knife to me some years ago.

But, I also have been using this little tool, attached to a pants front belt loop. From the Boomerang Tool Company, around $15. Super convenient - in fact it has pretty much replaced my little Buck knife the past few seasons. The image doesn't show the spring-loaded retractable lanyard inside the round part of the tool. Pull up on the two side squeezy-paddles and the blades close and partially retract into the tool. Probably not as good as a knife for emergency cut-offs as Pequa1 described, but a great piece of kit, nonetheless.
