Tog & Mackerel

live bait

Well-Known Angler
Couldn't pass up the weather, & got out today for what may be the last trip. I usually save leftover green crabs in the bait freezer, & ended up with a big bag full & that's all I brought, I don't think I'll make that mistake again, they are real soft, first tap from Mr. Tog & the crab is gone, if a hit doesn't come quick they wash out. After three or four moves managed to put two 17" fish on ice. Saw birds working close to shore, & thought bass, but a few casts with a small tin produced mackerel, haven't seen mackerel in the sound for years. Beautiful day on the water, had to remind myself it's November, hope to get a day in next week, if not I'm done.

I've heard of massive schools of small, 8" macks along the Eastern end of the North Fork Sound this fall feasting like crazy on small anchovies. Scary part is NOTHING feasting on the macks!!

My father remembered as a kid in the 50's the fall was the time to catch mackerel out of Sheepshead Bay. 7 or 8 years ago there was a nice mackerel run outside Jones Inlet for months during the winter. A mile or two out. Keep your fingers crossed , maybe the crazy fall wind will die down and I can finally get out in December for macks. Dying to get out for bass if they're still around. Less than 2 foot seas in my 25 Panga.

There will be some blue bird days to be had for sure but remember, you might be all by yourself...........
