Got out yesterday as per Connecticut regulations with 5 onboard. With an iffy weather report I was kind of nervous we’d have a few no shows, but that wasn’t the case at all. I got down to the boat to find the whole group ready to hit the grounds.
Boat was geared up with hand sanitizer, buckets of freshwater with bleach, paper towels, soap, masks, and gloves. Everyone fished around 10 feet apart.
We got off the dock about half an hour early which was nice. Past the break wall and headed East. With the incoming tide basically for the entire trip I knew if we were going to find some fluke today was the day. We setup the drift and drifted perfectly at a little over a knot or so. Covering quite a bit of ground in a short time. All of the sudden we started picking shorts. Ran back up on the drift and we boxed the first keeper of the day. Continued drifting in the area for a bit and continued to pick a few shorts. When that died out we made a few wiggles with pretty much the same results.
I dropped down my rig and immediately felt something grab my line. Not fluke like at all though so I decided to reel up and check to see what it was. It turned out to be a live squid. A first for me. Rigged him up and dropped him back down whole. Only to be torn up by a short fluke, not exactly the 12 pounder I was hoping for. Oh well! Maybe next time.
With the trip coming to a close I was bummed out a friend of mine was going to go home without a keeper. He fished hard the entire trip and I was hoping that he would be rewarded. I told him all it takes is one good drift. All of the sudden. He hooks up and yells for the net. A nice fat 7.8lber hit the deck. He was smiling ear to ear.
I’d say there was more action this trip on white and pink bucktails/teasers. A few fish were caught on conventional rigs. Also, noticed there seemed to be fewer birds than usual around.
Until next weekend tight lines all!
