What’s The Threshold For A Speeding Ticket

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. So I’m traveling east on the LIE this afternoon, I’m in the middle lane, cruise control set at 70 & cars in the left lane are passing me. As we go past the entrance ramp at 68 an unmarked Police car on the side of the ramp, the Officer standing next to the car, radar gun pointed at the traffic, no response from him or her. How fast do ya have to go?

I alway try to not go over 68 in a 55 and never had a prob. Agree with Cany… keep it 70 or under. They want the fly bys doing 80 and over.

Some school zone speed checks don’t care if your 1mph over and you get fined.

Same with 30mph zones if they are working that detail.

Officers could make millions in revenue at 4 way stop signs, no one full stops or sometimes ever attempt to stop.

use to have a good friend who was Suffolk PD - he told anything greater then 5 mph over the speed limit is fair game - so that's where I set my cruise control

Family members on the job always told me 10

However what I wrote was more in line as to what they really think and do.

I thought 15 over on the highway?
On sunrise heading east towards home I stay at no more than 65 though and watch all the city its fly by me in their fancy rides and get popped ?
In the villages that have their own forces like quogue and westhampton you cant go a tick over
41 in a 40 in Quogue gets you pulled

I was pulled over in WHD doing 27 in a 25. Once he saw the fishing rods, and I "shared the bite" I was free to go. 8-)

I drive a "stick" - ever since 2011 when I bought my first 6-speed I no longer come to a dead stop at stop signs or red lights (if making a left) - kinda slow into it - no -one coming - I go to second or third & cruise through

I've had a 6-speed ever since.

Everyone does that until they find out their is a camera and you get the fine in the mail, sister next door got one $75 bucks

Everything depends on the guy with the radar gun. Some of them would give their own mother a ticket and others are much more lenient.

Hope you get the latter!

Couple weeks ago, on one of my rare trips west of the Riverhead traffic circle, got off the expressway near Queens College & got 2 automated speeding tickets in a 4 minute span.

That sucks. How fast over were you going so we all know where they set the "limit"?

Speed Limit enforcement is so variable. The only "safe setting" for Cruise Control is 8 miles over the limit. I know the motto in WI is a Statee saying, "If you're doing Nine you're Mine". In towns notorious for speed traps that number may be as low as 5 miles over.

And then there's I-80/90 at the IN/IL border which is constantly a construction zone with a 55 MPH speed limit. If you're not doing over 70 MPH you're taking your life in your hands because people are blowing past at more than 80 MPH at the rare times there's no traffic...

Both tickets were 36 in a 25
You be screwed. In Germany they'll nail you if your 1 MPH over the limit!!

Most states do not award "Points" to Speed Camera tickets since they can't prove who's driving the car. At least that means no impact on your car insurance. What about NY?

Illinois had a cute speeding erase the books ploy. You could plead Guilty under supervision, which meant you'd pay your fine, attend a remediation course about the evils of speeding and if you kept your nose clean for 1 year, off the record it went.
