Winter Kayak Fishing Report from the Housatonic

Jumped across the Sound again for a day of winter kayak bass fishing. Starting to get the hang of it. Pistol Pete and I hit double digits with the striped bass this afternoon. The set-up seemed perfect: 3 or 4 days of warm weather followed by two days of rain - wait one day for it to run off, cloud the water, and a bite just might start. That day was today. Didn't matter, really. We were going to try anyway. The wrinkle was the cold snap at the end; probably not enough to freeze the river, but possibly enough to chill the bite.

Not surprisingly, when it's 24 degrees, blowing 20mph+ and dead low tide, there wasn't a whole lot happening at the launch. Didn't matter. We train in the off-season. It's all an education.

The homework paid off as the tide started to move and we both started connecting with fish. I got ahead of Pete pretty quickly (which doesn't usually happen) when I got my first double-header and got dialed-in. He caught up to me after lunch and at the end of the day we safely caught and released about 30 fish between 18 and 26 inches.

If this sounds like fun to you, you might need help...

Talk to Captain Jerry Collins at Captain Kayak. Misfit Fishing Kayak Fishing Team will be touring the northeast beginning in... May? Last year the Hook-em on the Housey was a ton of fun and a great way to kick off the season. I don't know if Fisherman's Paradise will be running that kayak fishing tournament again this spring, but I sure hope so. We all had a blast and everyone won something. Talk it up!

Great job especially considering the weather conditions lately .I've always wanted to do Conn but work has kept me closer to home on shorter trips.Hope to get over there and try it out soon.

Glad to see you made it Eric. Good job over there.
Not sure yet if that's going on this year.
TBO Tourney in Niantic July 12-14 we already been reserving campsites at Rocky Neck State Park. Same peeps you took pics with last year come. Tad bit different in can't launch at the park but still fun. Night fishing allowed.
