What's Going on in the Nissequoge?

Used to be my favorite hunting ground before moving own to Virginia.

George has fished it this year and think put up a post in the reports this past spring. I used to fish it quite a bit but have been sticking with Stonybrook ..... less crowded and no crazy tides at the ramp.

it had pretty much gone to a "dead zone" the last couple of years following the disastrous dredging attempts - was wondering if it recovered

that'd be a perfect place to try out your new trolling motor BTW if the Privateer can handle that swallow a water

It started off excellent. Almost like old times. Many age classes and good numbers of them. The size drastically reduced over the simmer weeks but I feel there's hope for the fall. With all of those bunker on the outside I"m thinking they're holding some larger fish.

SMFH!! WTH kind of a world do we live in?? The FD should have yelled across the river to "Wait for the tide to come in!!" Unless they wanted to have a water rescue drill or there was a medical emergency, this was NOT a good use of the FD's time. It might teach those idiots a lesson about reading a tide calendar!!!

You don't want to get out of your craft in the Nissy. Too much muck. Did that once - sunk to my knees & couldn't get out. Luckily there was another boater nearby who lent some assistance allowing me to pull myself out of the muck using his transom. .

Last time I did that.

Before I left you couldn't even find bait fish in the River. Used to be at night (which is when I fished it 98% of the time) - all you had to do was shine your flashlight along the shoreline & peas would be launching themselves out of the water.

Used to love floating eels on a lighted bobber with the rod in free spool. Bass went nuts for the eels regardless of the time of the season. Tie off an eel on 3 foot leader with the bobber at the snap & let the river currents take it. No weight.
Anchored up.

Canoe had eight rod holders on it so I'd have at least three eels a floatin'.

Kept the eel off the bottom & swimming for no eel balls.

Always guaranteed to pick up a couple of bass - not necessarily all keepers but at least 4 or 5 hooks up a night. Trolled bass worms back there as well with a pretty good success ratio.

I really wish the media had posted those asshole's names. And that the FD guys told them to come back in 12 hours, you know, so they could recover the kayaks if they had been left out there. A couple of vollies would have gotten free yaks in 6.

When I saw the headline I figured they were pulled out of the river due to the strong currents there. Most boaters have found themselves waiting for the tide . . . That is a stone's throw from my boat as well as a state kayak launching site. Some of them know what they're doing but the majority haven't a clue.

They can't get the new docks in there soon enough. Currently. boaters and The new DEC building is going up fast there. My quiet getaway down at the Nissequogue is now going to be the home of the NYSDEC Marine Resources Center.

Blows my mind as well, that they didn't post one guy there to keep an eye on them for an hour or so till they refloated. Either the rescue squads (Bay Constabile, Marine Division and Public Safety) overreacted or things have been really quiet and they all jumped on it.

It's all the time and is why I can't use the ramp at the bluff. Mind you I have to have a ramp permit in Smithtown for a kayak to launch off the beach. Way too many think I can do that and haven't a clue.

It's a few more bucks but you're so much better off launching at the Nissequogie State Park which is about a mile from there.

Unfortunately they won't give a key and threw me out of using your side. Bankers hours for that state ramp. I only fish nissy the last two in and first two out and prefer to launch predawn. Short beach I'll launch from now on. Still can't resist hanging at the bluff to watch the carnage at the ramp on a Saturday morning.
