Superstitions go hand and hand with fishing. As a very pragmatic guy, I have to admit there are some things I bend my logical outlook for. Seagulls are on that list. I had a deckhand that was chasing a seagull around the deck ..... it couldn't fly because the room between the bench and the rail wasn't enough to spread its wings. I remember giving him a lecture afterwards that if you work on the water, you respect life, especially seagulls.
"A seagull at sea carries a sailor's soul, and the screech of the bird is the mournful cry of the dead man. Do not touch the gull to avoid injury to the deceased. "
I found out a few weeks later that on the way home that night my deckhand wrecked his car .
