The COVID-19 Science and Medicine Question Thread

Saw a reference to the mumps, measles and rubella vaccine as possibly a help in warding off the china virus. What I could not find in the same reference was the recency of the MMR vaccine. Without regard to covid19, does one have to get subsequent vaccinations of the MMR similar to tetanus and the flu vaccine ? Regarding the two different "types" of covid vaccines, does either purport to last longer as a preventative ?
 
The answer to your COVID specific questions is “Unknown at the present time”. Still on the learning curve and you asked questions that take time to answer. This highlights why a "normal" process takes years, as we may not know for years how long the immunity will last. They'll answer this by continuing to monitor clinical trial patients to see how long their antibodies continue to last.

Sad, but very true. It's easy to get a prototype assay to work and takes about 5% of a project time. There other 95% of time is spent shaking it out and making sure it actually works all the time and can be manufactured...

To be fair, an academic scientist wouldn't have a clue how to do this and this result is proof of that.

Isn't this old news. I seem to recall months ago, during the era of "everyone who wants a test, can get a test," a report that the Federal Gov't rejected European test kits in favor of US sourced kits, but then those kits were flawed; or was that something else?
 
Question: How will you know when it's your turn to get the vaccine? Is there a plan in place for this? Will you be notified?

I tried looking that up but didn't really find anything concrete.

Each individual state is responsible for the organization of the vaccinations. Contact your State CDC to find out more.
 
The R&D and approval process on those vaccine was, to say the least, expedited. But what about the testing process, was it as rigorous and expansive as other vaccines were in the past?

Pretty much so. The key here is parallel project tasks versus sequential. In a "normal" time line, you do each project phase in sequence so in case you find any surprises, your potential materials lost due to reformulations are minimized. Here, Pfizer & Moderna locked down their manufacturing early and made clinical trial materials, and Operation Warp Speed told them to go ahead to manufacture X doses of vaccine for distribution prior to the EUA acceptance. Had they had any "surprises", the US government was going to cover that financial loss.

Now we're seeing the offshoot from this "Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead" process with AstrZeneca's misstep. They had an epic fail by getting the concentration of their active ingredient wrong, allowing for that unplanned "lower" initial vaccine dose. It seems fortuitous in that it appears to give a better immune response, but by not running your clinical trials according to the approved protocol, the trial is invalid. That's why were not hearing about an impending US submission from them, they are redoing their Phase III Clinicals with the appropriate protocol.

Finally, the Emergency Use Authorization allows for product to be release prior to post-clinical studies that are mandatory for a full FDA Approval. We're seeing some of the items that are usually answered, but not in this case. The fact that nobody can tell how long immunity lasts is because this is a real-time event and can't be predicted. Pfizer and Moderna continue to test immunity in their clinical subjects, but since clinicals were complete only a few months ago, and folks still have significant antibodies to the spike protein, all we know is that immunity "lasts" for few months. As time passes and testing continues, this immunity window will probably expand, but for how long nobody knows.

Strain seems to be more contagious, although there is some scientific debate going on regarding this. Everyone agrees that it is NOT more virulent, thank goodness, and it is covered by the vaccines.

My Doc thinks he'll have the Moderna vaccine in his office in the next month,he said this just a few days ago..
 
I certainly hope that they continue to ship the Pfizer vaccine to the hospitals etc. with the super freezers and don't waste Moderna's on them and instead ship Moderna to the pharmacies and doctors with just regular refrigerators. But it is the gubmint behind this, isn't it.
 
Why are there two different vaccines, can they come up with more scenarios to make this more confusing and frightening?

Have other Pandemics, disease & epidemics of our past had multiple vaccines.
Had the Polio vaccine need several different types before it was successful?

it's popping up in Denmark, Italy, Austria and few other European countries as well - EU is banning flights from the UK - why only the UK beats me & why bother if it's in several countries already? I

Don't sweat it Jack, this is all good...

Why are there different versions? Pretty simple, different manufacturers use different techniques for their vaccines and all the vaccine manufacturers dropped everything else they were doing to start on this once the virus's genetic sequence was published.

Interestingly enough, for all intents and purposes, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are the same thing, like an old Evinrude and its Johnson equivalent. Their internal workings are identical, just different "packaging". They both use mRNA strands encased in lipids to instruct your muscle cells to make the viral spike protein. The solutions that the nanolipid particles are suspended into are different and are probably the reason for the storage difference, possibly along with the lipid composition of the nanoparticles. These are the first mRNA based vaccines ever sold, although the technology has been around for years, used in R&D and manufacturing. Very glad and excited that it's finally getting its due.

Yes, there were multiple iterations of the polio vaccine, the last version wasn't an injection, but a liquid that was dropped onto a sugar cube and we ate the cube. I remember that one vividly, hell I got a snack!!

They had the same parts, besides the colored exterior items, the same part in the same year 6HP said OMC Part#12456, not Evinrude or Johnson part #. How about the guts of Chevy Silverado and a GMC Sierra?

Ask Cany, the guts are the same. You can choose which one is the Johnson, my sleeve is up for the first available.
