Up until last evening, the only vocal noise I've heard deer make was a snorting buck chasing a doe during the rut. During my nightly walk yesterday, I came upon the local doe who had 2 fawns this spring. She was standing at the side of the road, but the fawns were nowhere in sight, probably in the adjoining woods the doe was facing. She stared at me for a moment, and then "barked", best description I can give the noise she made, and bolted into the woods.
I can only assume her "bark" was to warn the fawns of a big, ugly person coming. Can any of you deer hunters further elucidate on this topic. Are vocal deer noises common?
