Captains Table "Bay Day"

Had Rich and his family out yesterday for a fine fall day of fishing. Weather was beautiful with comfortable temperatures but the winds were just a bit too strong for a trip out to the Sound. So, we opted for some action in the more protected waters of the Peconic Bay system.

First stop was by Jessups for the ebb tide and happily the Weakfish bite is still holding on. Mainly shorts with 10 fish coming over the rail for about an hour but one 19” keeper did find it’s way into the box. Mixed in were some extra-large Scup, close to the spring spawners we love to catch in May which put smiles on every one’s faces. Thanks for the heads up, John/Live Bait! We closed out by anchoring the boat over another well-known Porgy drop and the chum, as usual, worked its magic providing a crazy bite for the last 2 hours of the trip approaching the end of the ebb tide. The group kept a dozen of the largest Scup for the grill and enjoyed playing catch and release the rest of the time.

I noticed the water temps are starting to drop a little, down 2 degrees from last week so we are heading in the right direction for Blackfish. One of my customers had booked 3 trips but, unfortunately, is dealing with a health issue that will keep him off the water this fall. So, there are 3 openings all on or near the favored ¼ phase moon periods that just opened up. They are all weekdays but that is often the best time to get out and avoid the crowds. The newly opened dates are Friday 10/22, Monday 11/1, and Monday 11/15. Please let me know if any of those dates might fit your schedule.

John, I found a very consistent Weakfish bite where I was fishing yesterday the entire season going back to mid May. The fact that they have been spread out over such a wide area makes me feel next year is going to be another banner season for Weaks. I also think we will see an increase in the overall size of individual fish as well. Can't wait to see what next spring holds in store for us!!!

Thanks for the report Capt Mike!
Sounds like a very good day.
I would love to make one more peconic run this week but in addition to the weather I have to find a window that's open for both mine and Dan's schedules. :rolleyes:8-) He's got a gig Friday evening and working on locking in another for a fall festival in Westhampton on Sunday....

So far, Wed-Fri look like a real good weather window, Mitch. Personally I will be out of town or I would have tired it myself. Based upon what both John and I saw this past weekend I would think you could still find some Weaks around if you can get out. I'm sure you know moving water is a key and while I have favored the flood most of the year, we had good action on the Ebb this past Saturday. Good luck if you go.

Thanks Mike!
I was just looking at that weather window.
Hopefully I can coordinate work and everything else.
