I have warned about this for years. But I have to admit I never thought in my wildest expectations that they'd choose Hudson Canyon. You have to ask yourself why choose such a spot that's going to give you the most pushback? I'm guessing they don't give a crap about anything we think, or what they will be taking away from us.
I can hear it now "there are fish busting in the Canyon but we're not allowed to catch them." That after spending God knows what for fuel to try"
This is by far the largest threat we have seen to our sport to date. If you think their horrible handling of our fisheries has been bad wait until you see what happens. Once this door is open we will lose 50% of our fishable waters. Do you think that's an exaggeration? Well, check out the map below. You will see that Ca has had MPA for a few decades. It started to one in about the year 2000 and the map below shows how many and where they are now.
And you don't think that NY is going to do the same thing. If you read the entire MPA history in CA you'll be amazed at how they gerrymandered the rules over and over again to get them where they are today. Imagine these dots around Long Island. I can see a dot on the Smithtown Reef, or even the AB reef.
Anything we do or say will be told to deaf ears. Similar to the ear-hearing loss they've adopted towards recreational anglers period.
I know you have heard me, and others warn you before but this is truly and honestly a case where we need every aspect of fishing getting on board and stopping this clear attack on recreational anglers. As shown above, it spreads like cancer. I'm at a loss though as to how to get anything done in this Social Media environment. We need to become a team, not individuals if we are to be heard.
There is so much more to this story that will now begin to unfold. Just don't be mistaken by the left hand as the right hand is signing the bills. I believe they're targeting the Canyon because they really want something like Montauk. Then again no one listens to us anyhow.
I have fished in Ca a few times and I can tell you first hand it is now a big only money sport there. You could count the number of 18-foot boats on one hand. It's all big boats and big money. They have squeezed the surf angler off the beach and taken all inside productive waters.
The ONLY way to beat this is politically, and sadly I feel this is the last thing on their minds.
First, our oceans were and still are dumping grounds. Hell, we have a floating island of plastics the size of Texas in the Pacific. And in case you haven't heard they have found up to 270 thousand barrels of DDT in the waters of CA.
None of this takes into effect that our next hurdle in this disaster of a wind farm that they're rushing through.
We need to unite, and sadly my voice just isn't enough. We do have a good nucleus with the Sportfishing Federation but they can't get the movement needed.
I will be beating the drum on this one as it's a real threat. I will be outlining the many failures of our managers in the near future and look deeper into how their plans have worked to date.
Remember this isn't a regulation on what size or bag of tilefish, tuna, mahi, marlin, or any fish you can take from the historical sportfishing mecca "The Hudson Canyon" They want you to NEVER EVER fish there again.
We need a real movement, or Hudson Canyon will be nothing more than a curve on a chart.
