Today, June 24th, is the Feast Day of Saint John the Baptist, La Festa di San Giovanni Battista. Since its medieval founding, Saint John the Baptist (San Giovanni Battista) has been named the patron saint of the city of Florence. As he is known as a symbol of moral rectitude and political correctness, the city attributes its medieval economic fortune and successful Republic to Saint John. Every year the city organizes a major celebration for its patron saint on June 24th.

This celebration of Saint John the Baptist has ancient origins. On this day, nobles and lords celebrated the saint by donating large candles, known as “ceri” in Italian, to the churches. As the city of Florence grew in importance and weather, the candles became larger, more decorated, and more valuable. The best candles were made special for the Baptistery of Florence, which is dedicated to Saint John. Today, Florence's celebrations look a little different but the dedication of the day remains the same.

In Florence, June 24th begins with a parade starting at 9am in the Palazzo Vecchio, the civic center of the city. The parade includes Florentines dressed in traditional clothing, the Mayor of Florence, and other political officials. It followers the path from Palazzo Vecchio to the Baptistery in Piazza Duomo, the religious center of the city. At this point, the Archbishop of Florence receives the offering of candles at the Baptistry to symbolize the tradition of the celebration. Then, the Holy Mass can begin at the Cathedral at around 10:30am.

Later in the day, there is another parade which begins at Piazza Santa Maria Novella and makes its way to Santa Croce. This is where the final match of the Calcio Storico Fiorentino is played. Calcio Storico is a historical football match born in the 16th century! It is known to get quite aggressive and can best be described as a combination of soccer, rugby, and wrestling. Piazza Santa Croce is transformed into a football stadium for Calcio Storico where residents and visitors of the city can sit in the stands and watch the matches.

The finale of La Festa di San Giovanni Battista is a spectacular fireworks display known as fochi di San Giovanni or Fireworks of Saint John. Florentines and lucky tourists typically enjoy the evening outside to find the best spots to watch the fireworks which are visible from most places in the city.
