So who was Matt the professional?

as Jimmy Durante used to say. " I gots a million of 'em"

"Al and I hit it over the weekend, we hit it early and we hit it hard.As this was the first trip of the new season we did not fish.Instead it was a shake down cruise. Now folks I know what your thinking, what were Al and Matt doing dancing in the cockpit and boozing it up!! Wrong kind of cruise, you see a shake down cruise (a term applied in the 19th century) is when your out on your first trip and you methodically go over all your equipment and make sure it all works properly.A good captain will do this every year.

As far as fishing goes I can tell you this, the h20 looks clean(a good sign).Water temps still a little chilly for any pelagics but that could change soon.

Hopefully we will get some warmer and dryer weather.

Get ready its coming, heres to a good year for everyone.See you out there,Capt.Matt,THE PROFESSIONAL."

or this one-
"I hit it early and I hit it hard yesterday. It was to windy for the Lady so I took the surf gear and headed to Moses. The wind, she was a hard mistress blowing west, souwest. The h20 was dirty and had some cabbage (thats weeds folks (lol) ). Fair amount of fellow fisherman scattered about, nobody catchin though.

With the strong sweep and wind I knew I had to work my favorite 4 oz buck tipped with pork rind. I saw the guy next to me trying to fling a popper but it was'nt working. I yelled over to him to use a heavier lure that would sink. He blew me off and flipped me the bird, not very nice when you're just trying to be helpful.

I fished the buck hard off the bottom and in about 30 minutes I was slammed. I fought the bass to the beach. A nice fat schoolie about 22 inches. I held it up for Mr. Wiseass to see then released it back to Mother Ocean. I tipped my hat turned around and walked back to the denali. He could'nt see the grin on my face. A lession I'm sure he'll remember. Get ready, its coming, see you out there,Capt.Matt, THE PROFESSIONAL. "

How about HJ ?? he always seem to have a quite different perspective on things.

Oh and he could ruffle few feathers with the best of them. :giggle:

Blazetoy - another piece of work...

I don't remember Capt Walt, must have been before my time. Would be nice to have some more Maine compadres here for Mud and my luncheons...

I just can't help myself:

"
Yesterday just to get out on the h20 I fished the skinny water (thats when you fish very shallow water). I fished a couple of hours of high tide and drifted sandworms over the vast flats of our Great South Bay. I managed to cull 2 fat kingfish and 1 small weakie.

In the meantime we wait for the run to begin. You see folks when the water temps drop the bass will start to migrate from Montauk all along the shores and head our way. Speaking of The Mecca we lost a great one last week. I'm speaking of Franklin Mundus, a great pioneer in offshore fishing particularly shark fishing. Although I never met Mr.Mundus I felt a certain kinship to him. He was only 10 years older then myself and we both came up through the ranks, hard fisherman taught to fish hard. He will be missed. God Bless, see you out there, Capt.Matt,THE PROFESSIONAL."

Perhaps the best part of Captain Matt's post was that even after two full years of them, guys would argue in the report thread that he was wrong, didn't know anything about fishing, etc. Those guys would be wasting their money going to The Comedy Club or the old Catch a Rising Star!

Well old Matt finally caught that 29 inch "COW" bass and then the fat lady sung for the last time on his fishing exploits and he and Al are now "hitting it hard" in that great POND in the sky!!! TWO BEST FISHERMEN IN THE WORLD were named Matt...the professional and Ahern......Ahern was a terrific story teller and a great teacher of saltwater exploits!!!

Oh you must remember him he was also beachmoose

Well, if he has passed on, RIP, but this seems to be one way to properly pay our respects:

"I hit it early AM today. Managed to cull a nice fat shad. I livelined him all over the place and once again, nada. Not even a bump. The area is loaded with all sorts of bait but no pelagics. It could be over. The only ray of hope was on the radio a gentleman said he limited out and was heading back to the dock because his kids were tired. I don't know if they limited out on bass or perhaps tautog. Lets hope it was bass. See you out there,Capt.Matt, THE PROFESSIONAL. "

"I originally was'nt going to imprint this report into the computer but I changed my mind so here goes. Yesterday I took my neighbor Jim out fishing on the Grady Lady. He admits he does not like fishing on boats and prefers to go surfcasting. I told him we would go plugging and have a great time plus the conditions were right for a cow. Jim shows up at the boat with his 11 foot surf rod and his surf bag full of lures. I did'nt want to insult him so I let him fish with his own equipment.

Off we went to look for structure around the light house area. Water conditions are not good, the east winds and rain has made the h20 brackish. We were shut out, nada. It looks like it might take a couple of weeks for this to clear up and we might miss the fall run completely.

As for Jim he was slinging lures all over the place and took two good dings out of my hull and almost took my eye out. No more boat for Jim. Al and I have a trip planned for this weekend. Lets hope the conditions improve or it may be time to haul the boat. See you out there,Capt.Matt,THE PROFESSIONAL."
