We lost a healthy bluefish fishery (remember all the boats that fished the Patchogue grounds)

I go back further than that, as do you, I suspect. I remember the night bluefish chumming with cut butters and smelt on Ambrose Ridge and daily daytime slaughters at the old Acid Grounds. The Patchogue Grounds came later. I was a mate on the BlueFin II back then (very late 70's I believe) - and fishing that area up in the big boat's bow had a Penn 500 stripped by a BFT that picked up my AVA67 and stripped that reel to the spool's bottom, before the Capt. had a chance to turn the boat and give chase. I did put new gears and drags in that reel, but it was never the same. I think I gave it to one of the junior mates on the boat that season. Them was the dayz.

I remember fishing the acid waters for Bluefish back then as well. IIRC a green banana was popular during that time period.

Yep, the Maine Lobsta' Boat Races are really something. 500+ cubic inch Chevy big blocks, no real power-limiting rules - just raw torque. Plenty of vids of those boats going airborne and flipping over. That's the price of driving a hull to three and four times their design speed.

Don't know if I'd be sitting on the transom of one of those beasts at speed, seems kinda dangerous to me. But those guys have the experience, so there's that. Also, I like the ear-protection they wear. Open headers will require it, or they'll be saying "What?" to everyone for the rest of their lives.

I'm sure he spends alot of time on the water, hours and days of fishing, to put together a 10min video.
It is a lot of work. I did one with him last year, and it was all business. It was good to see him, but he was working hard. l could never do it.

But it can't be denied that he catches a lot of fish. Even when many aren't.
