Ponquogue Bridge Bass Have Arrived

"Back bays" and bridges are getting a little crowded out on Eastern L I, so I went to Ponquogue Bridge, hoping that some of the schoolies that everyone's getting in the bays and Quogue Canal had made it as far as the Bridge in Shinnecock Bay. Wasn't marking much at all and the only bass I caught I did not catch where I was marking. Nonetheless it felt good to catch when I really wasn't expecting to.
I'm seeing typical early season bass patterns, but about 2 weeks earlier than last year, by my estimation. The early numbers seem better than last year, too. Hope I'm right.

Ahh, still another way to measure. Probably better than tape on my rods or marking the deck of my yak ! thank you.

posting reports does nothing except lead to bigger crowds! Please refrain from making it worse for everyone else who fishes and keeps quiet.

Hey Bucktail I agree we don't want spot burning and I appreciate you not attacking the Angler. I personally have been in the reports business for 30 years and it's rare that a report causes crowding. I'm sure there are many that disagree but in most cases anglers use these type of reports more as an overview than a spot.

Good fishing and thanks for posting.

People always assume that I'm giving away the farm. First, I only caught one, very small fish. Hardly a glowing endorsement. Second, Ponquogue Bridge is hardly a secret. It's like Montauk Point in my opinion. Can you really "burn" it when everyone knows about it? Third, I never mentioned a tide or what lure I used. Finally, if you think I'd burn a spot that was red hot, nobody knew about, and was producing fish for me and my friends, then you're naive. Happy fishing and good luck.

Another view of fish reports: After another all but defunct website had a big problem with posts of a sand eel bite off a certain S shore beach, and the resulting chaos there, what few reports that provided any guidance at all and anywhere were eliminated, seemingly whether by boat or surf. Soon, only party and head boat reports, (all in CAPS, lol) were posted. These reports never gave a location, just the name of the boat, and maybe inside or outside a mentioned inlet, and that everyone caught keepers. I for one never visited the reports sections again and admit my involvement with the "Discussion Boards" was greatly reduced. Was I alone in feeling this way ? It would seem not. Its not like I am not going to fish with or without "reports", but I would like to at least get an inkling if a certain species is available in a general area.

That is a great response! There was a time that my old site was blamed for "elbow to elbow" surf casters at Montauk in the fall! It's almost laughable. I have posted reports and techniques over and over on how to catch bass in the back of the Nissy and Smithtown Bay and Porpous Channel numerous times, and I still have it all to myself on almost every trip.

The biggest spot burner is the cell phone. You know "if I tell you do you promise not to say anything." That's the only time you really know the fish are there.

I was waiting for a post like the “spot burning” one. Reminds me of the way things went on our old website. Soon no one posted any reports from their private endeavors because of the un-silent minority making comments that they felt it violated some sort of code. Get a grip. It’s a report. Not a roadmap.

Although I do think posting pix of short fish is sort of dumb, lol.
You see Pequa many anglers, myself included enjoy catching and releasing bass. And we take plenty of pictures. For me, it's more about the moment than the size of the fish. If I only took photo's of big fish, my phone would have a lot more space left on it :)

For some it's more about the experience.

My point is that the longer some people take to snap a picture, the longer the fish is out of its element. I take pictures of fish I will eat. I have a lot of space on my phone.

I am glad to see that someone else noticed the same thing.
