RING Doorbell/Home security

is there that much crime up there these days that you guys need something like that? Or is this just some cool toy that you feel ya gotta have?
I don't recall ever feeling like I need something like that when I lived up there.

Heck.

Down here 90% of the time my doors aren't even locked.

I just like keeping an eye out. I have a camera in the living room to see what the dog is up to as well.

These days? Crime has always been present. While I live in a 'nice' town my home was robbed 24 years ago. Nothing to do with 'these days'.

Onacock grades an 'F' for crime , and not much higher than a 'C' in much else. Livability 57/100

Saint James grades an 'A' for crime. Livability 72/100. The only 'F's are in costs and housing.

Just that when I was living in Kings Park I never felt like I needed a security system or "magic doorbells" to feel secure. I was wondering if things had gotten worse in the 5 years I've been gone that everyone felt they needed something like this to feel safe. Or was just something cool to have.

While I don't know what the F or C meant that you referred to up there - I did find a summary (from the same site):
The overall crime rate in Onancock is 37% lower than the national average. For every 100,000 people, there are 4.76 daily crimes that occur in Onancock. Onancock is safer than 18% of the cities in the United States. In Onancock you have a 1 in 58 chance of becoming a victim of any crime.

I also don't know where Onacock is - so maybe that's the thing.

Things change. I live in a pretty good neighborhood and I always thought things were okay, but I've had police detectives at my house to download videos from my surveillance system. It's also captured people coming up my driveway to pilfer things from cars when my neighbor had credit cards stolen from his car. It's not a panacea, and most importantly the PD has to actually give a cr@p. But you would be amazed at what goes on, even in good neighborhoods.

and it has not been an issue everywhere - it was not an issue when I lived in Kings Park - it is not an issue here

I bought one as soon as I moved into this house. It’s great I see everything and anyone who approaches my property

Any of these home camera devices are a great idea, whether you live in a city or out in the Boonies. I happened to have a friend give me a pair of NEST cameras. I keep one positioned in the room over the garage pointing at the front door and out the driveway. Not too concerned about any shenanigans, folks are very honest here, but great when unexpected events like surprise deliveries arrive. Once we were away for a long weekend and a delivery of blinds that wasn't supposed to come for another 3 weeks got dumped on our front porch. I was able to call a neighbor and ask him to move them to the back of the porch so none of the expected rain would get to them. My camera was definitely a Godsend that weekend.

The nice thing about some is that you can turn them On and Off from your phone using the app, so you don't need to leave them on all the time. Some apps will sense your cell phone when you get home and shut them off until you leave again. Like I said above, whether or not you're concerned about crime, these are nice items to have to help you stay on top of what's going on at "the ranch" when you're away.
