Like Mike said, it's an after dinner drink. Italians like to have it with espresso and dessert. In a lot of Italian restaurants if you order espresso it comes with a bottle of anisette and lemon rind.

For some reason I like it with a cigar, but I don't have it as a drink either.

And sometimes when I finish the drink I'll dip my cigar in the little bit left in the glass.

Either one works. I drank the clear for years before I know black existed...

Whatever they added to make it black I didn’t care for. IMHO clear is the way to go when added to Espresso or as a Digestif.
