Flounder/Blackfish

Yes. Airport. It's a chit show. Guys don't pay attention so anchoring up is a risky proposition

As for flounder, already tried PP and smitty's area. Going to give Plum Beach a shot.

I don't know where the boat is, try the Raunt Channel first - Like I said, it's all mud - You will be the only boat there - Plus there is suppose to be some wind this weekend, might have better protection there - Could even try the Silver Hole - Not telling you where to fish, just throwing out options - When I fished the airport, got there early, found my spot anchored up along with the other boats - Screw the drifters -:ROFLMAO: Enjoy 🇺🇲❤️🇺🇲❤️🇺🇲

I loved spring flounder fishing in Jamaica bay gave it up about 12-13 years ago. There is really no point going for something that is no longer there.
More of a tradition for my friend and myself. He's fished the bay recreational & commercially for 50yrs.

He knows the area, I just fish and don't ask questions..LOL!

Flounder are a PITA to fish for as far as prepping chum, bait, anchors....and the weather usually sucks but once you get that tell tale tap its all forgotten!

We'll give it a shot here and there until the end of May........see what happens.

My friends and I had a great time catching blackfish on the No Time out of Oceanside yesterday.
We stayed local/shallow and had steady action on blackfish for most of the day and quickly had a Spring/South shore blackfish limit of 2 pp.
Everyone caught, whether using jigs, sinkers, crabs or clams.
Nothing huge, but a fun way to start the 2025 season.

Made the yearly flounder trip as promised. Results were non-existent! Made a few drops in historically good areas, chummed heavily and fished hard for zilch. Made 2 trips for a total of 7 hours and caught nothing. Commercial friend who pots whelk hasn't seen a flounder in Jbay the last 5 years.

After that disappointment, decided to fish a few drops offshore on the next good weather day which was yesterday. Fished 65-110'. Deeper drop had a ton of life: Cod, Tog, ling and sea bass. Wasn't targeting tog but caught a bunch up to 6lbs. Cod were just keepers and ling were big. Fished 7-11am.

Today it was back to bass for a couple hours. Released a bunch but kept these for the guy at the Marina. ....3 guys fishing ORL

While I too mourn the loss of our winter flounder, I must say a nice fresh Cod filet on the table is an excellent substitute! Well done!

Cod here are usually around March-Early May. Nice clean fish. No worms. And they usually respond well to jigs.

The spot we fished inshore usually has flounder in June/July.

We'll see what happens this year.

Yesterday was great. Friend had all the bunker he needed so he loaded us up saving an hour getting bait. Went where the Bass were rolling yesterday but they had moved further east. Once we found them it was constant action. All slot fish. Nothing bigger than 30".

Spring is the only time I usually fish for Bass and with circle hooks I know the fish are released unharmed.

Not a reply but a question probley close to 40 years ago we usedto do an annual may charter out of montaulk for snowshoe flounder and cod in early may flounder were plentyfull and would run up to 5 lbs cod would go up to 40 i know the numbers are almost nonexistant but does anybody try combos likethis anymore

Last time I caught a flounder near the hooter bouy had to be 25yrs ago. That doesn't mean they're not around. In fact I just heard some commercial boats are loading up on whiting South of block........

Back to the Bass fishing this morning. Got an early start and saw the bunker guys working early. Our friend waved us over and dumped couple dozed in our livewell so off we went. The back bay spots still had fish. Mostly 24-29".

C&R 8 fish by 6am. Figured the Armada would start showing up so we went west towards Coney Island to a spot that had bigger fish. Didn't disappoint. A quick 3 fish 34-38" released as the tide flopped out.

It was now 8am and boats were everywhere...... trolling, casting......time to head back.

Another good day but Bass season is winding down for me. Was a great spring! Most days were double digit. Didn't keep track of how many but most were in the 26-30" range smallest 24"...biggest today at 38"

Happy memorial Day and thank you to all those who served.

Unexpected weather window this morning so Cap and I headed out for some Bass. Only wanted to fish a couple hrs so we headed West to where the bigger fish were hanging out.

Was slow for a few drifts then the switch turned on. All over slot fish including a 45" bruiser that was not happy about the 8/0 circle hook in his jaw. All fish safely released including the 45" that slapped my friends hand as he swam away.

Sadly, the days of Cod and Snowshoe Flounder fishing near the Hooter Bouy, SW of Block are long since gone. I used to actively participate in that fishery for many years both on Party boats and my own vessels in the 70's and 80's. BTW, back then you could also count on catching some Haddock mixed in on the same grounds.

Winter Flounder in our area are close to extinct, with very few exceptions. Cod have tapered off quite a bit as well and now we are faced with a total shutdown for the months of June, July, and August for NY anglers. That means no more Coxes Ledge Cod for NY based boats in the summer! Really sucks as I loved that fishery and would already make at least one or two runs out there each summer.

Cod does open again for NY based anglers on Sept. 1 and if you really want a decent shot, I would call Capt. Ron Onorato in Montauk (Capt,. Ron Fishing), He may be one of the very few boats left that even tries to target Cod and actually still catches them.
