Fog Is My Kryptonite

Lets be clear I hate fog, their are times when I will fish in the fog, but when solid dense fog settles in at Plum Gut & I start hearing the horn on the ferry it turns me into a little scaredy cat girly girl, as was the case this morning. I turned & retreated into the bay a couple hundred yards west of the ferry terminal where the fog wasn't so bad, determined to sit it out until the fog lifted. Only took less that one hour, & it was game on in the gut, ended the morning with 7 bass up to 37" all returned except one unlucky slot fish. Have I mentioned that I hate fog?

I have a picture somewhere of a 50' young brothers cut in half by another boat steaming in the fog on autopilot.

Fog is no joke. Seen some of the best captains second guess themselves when they hear the waves crashing but can't see the jetty 59yrds away.

Being safe is the name of the game!

Funny you should mention waiting for the Fog to lift this morning just west of the ferry, John. I was running the Orient Star this morning heading west to the bay and I thought I saw you there but said to myself "who the heck would be fishing here?"

Actually, you made the smart decision, and it paid off as well.

As others have noted, no matter how experienced you may be or have the best electronics available, it is always wise to err on the side of safety in those situations. Not to say I never fish in those conditions but I definitely take it super slow. Much more worried about the other "a-holes" that think they can run at cruising speed just because their radar is turned on!

Not the first time I sat in that spot waiting for the fog to lift, yesterday less than an hour I could see the Orient lighthouse from where I was & it was time to go, when I arrived in the Gut 2 guys there fishing from a jet ski, don’t know if that’s courage or stupid, or young & dumb.

Not the first time I sat in that spot waiting for the fog to lift, yesterday less than an hour I could see the Orient lighthouse from where I was & it was time to go, when I arrived in the Gut 2 guys there fishing from a jet ski, don’t know if that’s courage or stupid, or young & dumb.

I was there yesterday and saw those guys on the jet ski. Not too smart when the water temp is 54*. Those life jackets won’t save your life if you go in the water. They are only to help them find you after you succumb to the cold water.

I do a few kids camp trips, among others, on the Orient Star every year and it is a blast for the kids and me as well.

I too have seen some idiots fishing for Bass on Jet Skis in the Gut a few times over the years. All of your observations apply!

It was a classic case of some dope "outrunning" the effective range of their radar in really poor conditions. Using an autopilot in that situation is also a really bad choice.

The issue to the west is the number of kayaks fishing especially in the Floyd Bennett/Mill Basin area. In fog or pre-dawn those guys are really hard to see.

The risk involved with kayaks is not limited to the west. I also see far too many folks in kayaks with no high-flying Orange or other brightly colored flag on their stern to improve the visibility of these water level craft adequately.

Then to add to the insanity some folks seem compelled to select a dark green or camo colored hull which virtually blends in with the water. Some people must really have a "death wish"!
