Sorry to hear thatRose is getting the liquid pain meds for our Brady. The end is near![]()
Welcome to my worldMy friends invited me to join them on their regular bike ride from Field X at Jones Beach up and down the OP bike path to various places.
My imaginary self, you know the one that doesn't see the fat old guy in the mirror, says "Hey, that sounds like fun."
So, I drag out the 1980's vintage ten-speed, wipe off the barn-find dust, air up the tires to 85 PSI, and miraculously they didn't pop. I rode it up and down the block to make sure the brakes worked without ending up sprawled in the street next to my teeth. Good to go!
We load the bikes in my friend's truck, then drive to some field other than we expected because Bay Parkway is closed. Unload the bikes and we're off to the races.
Riiiiiggghhht.
Maybe you never forget, but you can come close. Fortunately, my friends were very tolerant and let me set the pace, and we made plenty of stops. I didn't face-plant, wobble off the path or get to see my kneecap again like a certain previous ride on this bike.
There were a few awkward moments where I was struggling with which direction the shifters had to go, and basic $#it like how to start and stop without falling over. Other observation: It was pretty easy going East, because 10 kt breeze. Bucking that wind on the way back, OTOH, was pretty challenging for the fat old guy in the mirror. But otherwise we had a fairly good ride.
Now I'm home, paying the price.
My @$$ feels like I've been sitting on an anvil. My shoulders and triceps are on fire from leaning on those handlebars. My knees sounded like popcorn about 3/4 of the way in. I'm still waiting to see what else will revolt against the abuse. I know that's coming, I just don't know when.
I'm not usually a fan of pain meds, but I started on the Ibuprofen early. I'm REALLY not looking forward to getting up tomorrow morning. Heck, I'm not even looking forward to getting up off the couch.

MTB flash backYou do everything to get politics banned, and you start again with politics?
Welcome to my world
I may invest in a more modern saddle. This one is from a time before they understood the kind of nerve damage that came from zero padding. For better or worse, my keyster doesn't have enough padding to compensate for that.

They sell padded bike shorts you can wear under your shorts. I bought a pair for long rides and they definitely helpedYeah, I know what the future holds. Almost all my friends are 10 years or more older than me. So I have quite a preview. I'm not looking forward to it.
The outcome was not quite as horrible as I expected, although I suspect the antiinflammatories had something to do with that.
Shoulders and triceps are a little sore. My butt is pretty tender from that seat. And so far, my legs have not punished me in retaliation. I'm also not getting on that bike again for at least a week.
