I spent a whole week waking up to a minimum of 80° each morning up to 98° with a feel like a 105. I am freezing this morning.

One of several projects today, but I finally got around to rejiggering the light over the basement workbench to LED.

Ignore the yellow stripe across the tubes in the pic. It does not exist in reality.

SuperbrightLEDs are aptly named. No ballast, direct wire, 5000K etc. As my eyes get older I'm reminded of why my predecessors always loved those hundred watt bulbs.

It would probably illustrate better to show the difference in light on the work surface, but the mess is too embarrassing to post.

The other big benefit is the energy savings. When I started redoing these at work we measured the difference in the draw, and switching from F40CWs to ballast bypass LEDs dropped the amperage to 1/4 of the florescents. Also, the LEDs don't lose anywhere near as much brightness as they age like florescents do.

FYI, some of the tubes would work with a ballast, so it was a direct swap. But feeding that giant transformer made the energy savings trivial.

Avenger Jr. has become fascinated with the world of vinyl records. So we visited Looney Tunes and he picked out a few specific albums that really lean into the format.

Now, since he's going back to campus tomorrow I had to scramble to cobble these components together so he could start to experience the magic of LPs before the enthusiasm collapsed.

What s mess. The turntable is missing a foot? The needle was bent, and the drive belt was in crumbs. The amp hadn't seen daylight in twenty years. Fortunately, since I never throw stuff out there was a stash of speaker wire. But what to do about that drive belt? I've never fiddled with turntable belts before.

But thanks to my inane mechanical abilities, and the US Postal Service, a belt was improvised, and Avenger Jr. got to experience the "warmth" of vinyl. And the crackling and popping as well.

I have to admit, it sounded pretty good. We've got a real belt on order, so hopefully it will sound even better than the rubber band drive when he's home for the fall break.

Now I've just got to figure out where to put this pile of electronics. It can't take up residence on the dining room table.
