Fluke Season 2026 Analysis

if catch and release worked why do we have less fish every year. Here are facts both the rec and commercial fishing industries are disappearing and the gov't fishing jobs grow and the fish populations vanish

Come back to reality hawk. Rod and reel catch and release mortality doesn't compare to the waste from just 1 tow of a big dragger. Multiply that by hundreds of tows over a winter season and you can easily see how fluke numbers are greatly reduced. Ask any captain in Mass. how fishing has changed on the Nantucket shoals since the NC boats started showing up.

Here's the biggest problem with all of this. Commercial fishing lobby is strong and recreational is weak. I know Zeldin and to a lesser extent Shumer got involved but the effort was not sustained. I know what I have observed over the years and it seems the commercial sector just gets stronger at the expense of the little guys looking to catch dinner.

Go up to New England and speak with the commercial fishermen and talk to them about how much “stronger” their business is today vs 30, 20, or even 10years ago.

What we do is called “SPORT FISHING” not “food fishing for dinner.”

MM, you seem to be stuck on this notion that scientists ESPECIALLY those from NOAA are beyond reproach. That couldn't be further from the truth! I worked in Research for many years. One of the many lessons I learned from my PI who was Internationally recognized in his field was that of all the research grants that are approved and funded by NIH, 75% are a pipe dream, 20% might show promise and 5% are meaningful. .

Meaning, science is not the first priority for many! Not saying NOAA doesnt have good minds but I question their ability to adapt to the rapidly changing Ocean and its fisheries. They are always playing catchup and its probably due to an underlying agenda to placate special interests based on personal beliefs.

As far as people with advanced degrees go, there are many MDs, PhDs, etc, etc who get it wrong! Thats why there is a thing called MALPRACTICE.

There are only a handful of scientists in this world who have the ability to make civilization altering discoveries. Unfortunately, none of them seem to work at NOAA!

Wrong again. I don’t think that NOAA scientists are beyond reproach. I do however believe this to be true………. Many of the scientist’s employed by NOAA & our Universities can find much better paying jobs in the private sector. This I know as a fact because I know of a few scholars holding PhD’s that have turned down VERY WELL paying 6 figure jobs in the private sector to pursue their dreams. An example I personally know one such person made a career choice of working for the State Department and turned down a $200k+ position right out of school, Harvard, to work as a consultant for a major financial firm. And I know of others.

These people have a passion for what they do which is trying to make the world a better place to live.

The scientist should have no “agenda” in their quest to search for the truth. I’m sure there are those within NOAA that do, but I doubt very much it’s the ones in the trenches do the research.

Can you identify even ONE of these people with advanced degrees at NOAA or any research University involved in marine studies that have never mind been convicted, but even accused of malpractice? Do you know the definition of malpractice?

There are only a handful of scientists in this world who have the ability to make civilization altering discoveries. Unfortunately, none of them seem to work at NOAA!

Every discovery comes from the work built on by others before them. And they all work with the best available science to get to new discoveries. Every single last one of them.

Overboard you have no grip on reality you are the root of the problem blame commercial fisherman while the gov't makes regulations based on make believe numbers that are destroying the fishing rec and commercial industries anyone who has fished anywhere from montauk to long beach island and could say where are the bunker might understand these fish don't want to come in are bays could it be water quality the ocean is vast and mother nature is more powerful than NOAA,ASMFC and flat earthers like you

"The scientist should have no “agenda” in their quest to search for the truth. I’m sure there are those within NOAA that do, but I doubt very much it’s the ones in the trenches do the research."

MM doubts its occurring so we all must believe him. Another ASSumption.

"As far as people with advanced degrees go, there are many MDs, PhDs, etc, etc who get it wrong! Thats why there is a thing called MALPRACTICE."

Medical Malpractice applies to MD. Research "Malpractice" occurs when scientist falsify data which has happened many, many times. Not saying NOAA scientists falsify data but one could argue when they got the Sea Bass biomass numbers wrong by 1000% they should have been fired for INCOMPETENCE! When they used their own federally purchased dragger and caught nothing, those in charge should have been fired for INCOMPETENCE!

"Every discovery comes from the work built on by others before them. And they all work with the best available science to get to new discoveries. Every single last one of them."

Yet another ASSumption. You make statements that are wrong. ONCE AGAIN!

The 5% of scientists who make the great discoveries do so by thinking outside the box. When was the last time fisheries managers ever thought outside the box?

Getting back on track after your shameful personal attacks, NOAA has managed fisheries to the benefit of the commercial sector. Its very clear by all the other posts in this thread. Its very clear if you look at other fisheries ESPECIALL Bluefin Tuna!

The winter dragging is killing the fluke fishing. Nothing is being done about it!

Bluefish, weakfish, winter flounder and especially Cod are all victims of management failures and the list will continue to grow.........
