the "What are you doing NOW" thread (part deux)

Don’t even know where to start looking. What brand? How big?

start off by figuring put what size you're gonna need by determining what you want to power - that will give you the power rating you're going to need to start shopping for - then read reviews of any brands that fit that need - a lot of the times you can get a good deal on used - lot of people buy 'em when a storm is coming - then never use them again or only one or two times more & then sell 'em

I have a generac 5500 watt hooked up to my panel. Installed a disconnect safety in my breaker box. I just manage use through the breakers..... refridge, oil burner, hot water, etc as need. Want to cook? turn off the burner and hot water heater breakers. Like that. Has worked out great especially through Sandy !!
Its loud as hell but when you lose electric for maybe days, you get use to noise real quick.

Home Depot .... watch for sales. Think I paid 599 back in 2010.

Watching Jim Cantore standing outside in NC pretending the wind and the rain is much worse than it actually is ......

these weather guys live for this stuff.

12KW will handle most homes, including central A/C. Kohler or Onan-Cummings. Generacs MEH. A few extra KWs doesn't add much more cost, labor big component and don't forget the transfer switch.

Nothing better to be sitting in a room, everything goes dark and count it down, 3-2-1-VROOM: Let there be light.

No fueling up in the middle of the night out in a storm, no flipping breakers, no nothing...

For an automatic generator, propane, that size plus install I think you are looking at like around 4k including install ? I'm probably guessing low.

Probably a bit light, by $2K? Don't have a clue what I paid for mine since it was done when the house was built. Transfer switch itself is around $1K.

Based on LIPA's performance over the past 5 years, I'd say it's worth considering...

Look into restrictions as to where you can keep those propane tanks. My buddy had to meet a bunch of different criteria. I think he had to cover up a vent, take out an outlet and something else cant remember to meet code.

Yes, there are many items. My tank is buried, so the items you mention actually applied to where we could put the generator...

Does burying the tank help you with cold issues?
In the winter, unless you've topped off the tank you'll lose pressure due to the lower temperature.
