Captain's Table - Solid Montauk Fluking

For once in a very long time the weather report regarding sea conditions was wrong…in the right direction! Following 3 straight days of east winds I anticipated a pretty lumpy ocean as was the case this past Saturday while fishing with a good friend to the west. Instead after a nice calm ride from Greenport to the point, as we rounded Montauk lighthouse we were greeted by a gentle 2’ swell and a bunch of hungry fish! The benefactors of this good fortune were members of my “A” list anglers including Matt T. Frank G., Steve C., and the famous Chef Nader!

First stop on my favorite south side drop found almost instant action. A couple of short Fluke and quickly Frank ties into a nice fat 5# fish to get things rolling. For the next 4 hours we worked a similar drift line picking both Fluke and Sea Bass of varied sizes plus a few Whitting. When the dust cleared, the box was looking really fine with 15 beautiful keeper Fluke and 3 keeper Sea Bass resting comfortably on ice. Four of today's fish were in the 5-5.3# class so some really thick filets found their way into the take home bags. Matt was literally on fire the entire trip, landing 6 keepers himself and also taking top fish honors. Frank was close behind with 4 keepers and one of the 5 # class fish.

Although no giant fish were caught, this was one of those Fluke days we all dream of with strong action from start to finish. Kudos to an excellent crew for putting on a top-notch performance!
