Interesting piece on the Block Island windfarm. I had no idea the whole island used to run on diesel generators prior, so it is kind of a unique situation.

Ask the good citizens of Block Island what they were paying for electricity before and after the windfarms.

Without extensive government subsidies, they would have never been built

Block had a large, land-based windmill back in the late 70s, early 80s...

NYT didn't mention that. They said that the diesel generators are still there in case of emergency, does diesel fuel not go bad like gasoline?

It will eventually, but it takes a decade or two.

It appears they ran one once the offshore windmills went up, to sell surplus back to the grid.
Also, to get power to the island when the wind wasn't blowing.

I've never seen all those Windmills working at the same time.

As an aside, I also understand that they do not operate when winds are above 20knts which means they probably operate 2out of 7 days in winter!

Not the diesel you worry about. The tanks rust and degrade over time. Since its a secondary powere source, who knows if it's maintained properly.
