With the fluke season behind us, did you do better or worse than last year.

I did notice that as well. Seems like pretty heavy gear (rod and reel) for fluke fishing. Most of the gear back then was heavier than what we use now but that seems like really heavy tackle

    New Artificial Reef

Hi Benny I grew up fishing the western sound. Basically the area from Port Washington to Oyster Bay. Mostly the Hempstead Harbor area. There was (is) a proposed artificial reef site just north of Matinecock point. This goes back to the early 1980's. Pretty sure the site is still considered...

Count the Ways that we will be regulated in the future

Don't by any means mean to steal the thread. I was thinking of posting this issue for comments and it has been mentioned above in a few posts. When was the last time you saw or was stopped by a DEC officer? I fish the North Shore from early May to late November and haven't seen one in years. I...

    Rhetorical question

St. Patrick's Day was the "traditional" start of the flounder season back then. I too, remember as a kid catching Great South Bay flounder in mid to late February. If it was a mild winter it would start that early. If the bay was iced over, about two weeks after the ice melted. On the subject...

    Rhetorical question

For Fluke, it seems we get the spillover from the south shore and east end. Last year the fish hit Montauk and Orient and stayed there. We had a fishery in the sound last year but nothing great. This year it seemed to be a poor fishery everywhere. The east end had it's moments but nothing...

    Rhetorical question

Capt. Mike summed up the flounder fishery of the past very well. I am a few years younger-63 but remember those days well. We never thought the fishery would end and maybe we should have practiced conservation. I miss it too. St. Patrick's Day was considered the official opening of the...

    Rhetorical question

Pequa 1 is correct. There was a run of flounder in the fall. The fish would return to the bay and bed down for the winter. I do remember catching them in the fall as a kid. The fish would be full of roe and waiting to spawn over the winter. I never understood why the fleet would target fish...

    Rhetorical question

Flounder Joe added more on how good fishing was and how it changed. There was a large run of Boston Mackerel as stated. I remember jigging them off Port Jeff every spring. I moved to the Port Jeff area in 1986 When the fluke population started to rebound after many dismal years. That is when...

    Rhetorical question

I will start with commenting on this years Fluke season since that was the start of the thread. However I will add some history as well. I am in my mid sixties and fished the west end of the sound through my youth. This years Fluke season was a poor one for me fishing the sound in the Port...

Port Jeff Area The Fat Lady is singing!! Loudly!! Seals in the area

Fished Port Jeff area today. Seas were dead flat. Headed to the black fish grounds. BTW Bunker are everywhere. Inside the harbor, outside the harbor from Mt Sinai to Cranes Neck. Picked a few small black fish. No keepers. Different than the past weeks. Bite did not start until after...

Port Jeff Area What a difference a week makes. The fat lady may be backstage!!!

Black fishing seemed to all on the tide changes for me this year. It would start about 45 minutes before dead high or low. It would last about 45 min past the change. One the tide started rolling it would shut down or be a very slow pick. Good to see all the small fish but a few keepers would...

Port Jeff Area What a difference a week makes. The fat lady may be backstage!!!

Fished Port Jeff area today from about 7 AM to Noon. Last week, could not get the anchor line to come tight on the set. This week, hard to get an anchor to hold with the strong incoming moon tide and the strong SE wind. 200 ft of anchor line to get the anchor to hold in 40 ft of water...

Port Jeff area. Birds and black fish report

Pretty much the same report as I posted last Friday. Fished the Port Jeff area. Started the day chasing the birds. There were birds diving, and small surface splashes everywhere. Lots of rain bait in the water. Small blues however they would not touch anything. Switched to poppers and they...

    Port Jeff Area

Bluebird day today. Warm, wind finally laid down. Fished the Port Jeff area. Loads of small blackfish. No keepers for me today. They all seemed to stop growing at 15-3/4 inches. Hard to get the boat to come back hard on the anchor. Line was not pulling tight after setting the hook...

    Weatherman Got it Right-Blackfish-Albies ect

Fished the Port Jeff area today. What a pleasure that the weatherman finally got it right. Sound was dead flat. Current was running a little bit. Picked through many small black fish but got my legal limit. Three nice blacks about 18 inches each. One nice sea bass about the same size. Loads...

    Funny 1ft or less

The weatherman really got this one wrong!! It was hard east coming right down the sound. Fished outside Port Jeff due to limited options thanks to the weather folks. Picked some small blackfish. One keeper that went back. Some small to large sea bass and a few porgies. Lots of Bunker...

Tried to fish today too. Weatherman really blew today's forecast. Northeast and blowing.

With the fluke season behind us, did you do better or worse than last year.

Fluke fishing in the sound was very slow all season. Only had one keeper the first trip of the season. It got worse from that point. The Port Jeff Fleet did not bother fluke fishing. They started the season porgy fishing and never looked back. Hoping next year is better
