Jack, thanks for the info. That is great news. I hope you are local and can benefit from this as well. That spot looks perfect. Great place for cod, seabass and hopefully blackfish. Should hold some shark in the summer and maybe even some tuna.

When I click the link, I get this message, so I don't follow it. Any idea what is up?? I want to read more about this.

If you Google "nysdec 16 fathoms reef" it should be the first link that comes up, for the EIS for all the reefs. Then you can just search that .pdf file.

Yes, it's a nice location. In the middle of the Separation Zone, and about 9-nm West of the old NA buoy location. Or about 6-nm inshore of the 59-lber and 3 Fares.

OK, wow! I ended up finding several documents on line about the 16 fathom site. Some of the PDFs are large, over 100 pages. I browsed a couple last night before bed but of course not every word. What I couldn't find was information on whether permits have been issued, was there funding available, and when perhaps was a start date for the building. Not sure if they already have the material or if there is a plan in place. The only bad news is I couldn't find anything on the NYS DEC web site about this.

Sounds really promising. I hope it happens in time for next summer.

No details like that available publicly yet.

I inquired last year about the 12-Mile Reef and was told no info was available. Then a week later, there was an announcement about the 2 boats they put down.... So I don't expect to hear anything about this one till it's done either.

I believe the permit is in place now, is just a matter of getting around to it. With the pandemic being Cuomo's priority right now, and finding slashed, I'm shocked anything was done this year at all. If there was a date planned for this year for the 16-Fthm Reef, I would guess it's been pushed back...

Hi Benny

I grew up fishing the western sound. Basically the area from Port Washington to Oyster Bay. Mostly the Hempstead Harbor area. There was (is) a proposed artificial reef site just north of Matinecock point. This goes back to the early 1980's. Pretty sure the site is still considered undeveloped. It was roughly 40 to 50 ft of water is my memory is correct.

The local fisherman and PB fleets should put some pressure on the DEC to get that site underway. It has been sitting undeveloped for that long.

I also wonder why they did not add to the Smithtown Reef. That reef seems to get very little to no attention from the DEC. Yet it is right in their backyard in Stony Brook. I know a vessel was sunk earlier. However it had nothing added to it for years.

Great idea!

They have started deploying materials to the Matinecock reef and added additional materials to the Smithtown reef in the last 3 years.
