I tuned in and was floored. NJ believes that a closure is imminent. Here're some respected captains' feedback:
ASMFC,
I am the owner/operator of the Party Boat Fishermen in Atlantic Highlands, NJ. My family started business in 1958, I personally have been running the business for 48 years...
From NJFishing.com:
Not trying to fear monger here but keeping my ear to the ground since there are all sorts of rumors flying around from a full closure to some seasonal and area closures to status quo and gear and slot changes etc.
Your guess is as good as mine but I think the odds are very...
Got out for a quick morning fluke run to Long Branch NJ, good conditions, west wind, gin clear water. Most action in 40' , couple of nice sea bass too. Our 3 keeper fluke were 20-24". Even our seabass today would've been legal in NY :p
State regs are established based on fed parameters and prior year state regs. NJ has historically 'come to the table' with vigor.
In 2017, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) found New Jersey out of compliance with its fluke regulations. NJ implemented its own...
FYI, never seen it this bad. Nobody can say why (sustained South winds?) but it looks like most of the NJ dredged sand projects now have shoaled up choaking this busy inlet. Hoping it's cleared b4 Debby arrives
There's mosquitos on the river, Fluke are rising up like birds, it's been hot for 7 weeks now...... miss 'ya Jerry...
Great trip Mitch .... happy trails ....
Truth in reporting: 5 keeper fluke yesterday for 70+ fares on popular Brielle NJ party boat. NJ minimum size is 18", NY is now 19.5",,, there was only ONE NY sized keeper.
I went on morning trip: Good conditions, light W wind, good drift, very few bites. Everyone blames the cold water from...

And here's the residual consequences of what's happening in this fishery which will be significant. I don't have current information on the number of registered commercial operators in the Mid Atlantic region but it's significant. If large and jumbo fluke are getting on average $3 /...

Makes one wonder then about the overall health of the stock locally and cold water theories as to why the fishing has been way off this year. Check out the following link for the 2024 commercial summer flounder quotas by state...
The NJ ocean fluke are scarce and short. The last full moon should've brought in another wave of offshore fluke, unfortunately they're small. My friend wrote this fascinating post about why we're now seeing this effect of fishery mismanagement and I agree with his perspective:
" Since 2008 for...
I feel 'ya Roc. Up to 3 years ago I used to go Cod jigging at Little George's Bank in July, 300'. When u get double header DD Pollack they fight to the surface and kick your butt the whole way.
Did you find worms in the cusk?
I thought the North wind would help, nope. We drifted way too fast in a very choppy sea. I was outvoted by the senior crew members so we returned to the river and caught all shorts all morning. No keepers but a pleasure to get out again..
Thick fog prevented us from fishing the ocean this morning. We stayed in Shark River NJ , constant action on short fluke for 3 hrs. We did get 3 keepers up to my 22"er that put a smile on my face and a bend in my previously unused river rod, fun skinny water trip
I can't imagine what the bottom looks like. We used 8oz sinkers with the live bunkers, fished 3 cranks off the bottom. Sometimes u got stuck b4 u could get 3 cranks! Captain said there's cars down there and they move in the current!!
