I don't think I even owned a camera in those days...John Bowne HS, class of '68 for me.
Back then the winters were generally cold enough for the lake to freeze close to solid Dec-Feb. Played a lot of Hockey on the lake as well in those days!
Funny you should mention waiting for the Fog to lift this morning just west of the ferry, John. I was running the Orient Star this morning heading west to the bay and I thought I saw you there but said to myself "who the heck would be fishing here?"
Actually, you made the smart decision, and it...
Sadly, the days of Cod and Snowshoe Flounder fishing near the Hooter Bouy, SW of Block are long since gone. I used to actively participate in that fishery for many years both on Party boats and my own vessels in the 70's and 80's. BTW, back then you could also count on catching some Haddock...
I grew u p walking distance form Kissena Park and fished that lake countless times as a kid. Plenty of Catfish and Carp back then and the occasional small Bass. But never one like that! Well done, Bassmaster.
Maureen has every right to " go crazy" after a catch like that. What a terrific feeling!!!
I love how she is making sure you don't risk dropping her prize overboard.
Great job, John! I was actually on the 9 am Ferry out of Orient that morning and I thought I saw you there.
Happy to hear you enjoyed such a great battle and did the perfect release.
I totally agree with your description, Roccus. You can't be daydreaming, looking at the scenery, or the pretty girl in the boat nearby and expect to catch while 3-way bucktailing. :D
My family has a very long-standing tradition of bringing all our members together, even some from far out of state, to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend.
Since we are all seafood lovers, I have always made it my commitment to catch a fresh Striped Bass for our BBQ Grill as one of the special...
I almost forget, but that is also correct, John and Overbored. The venerable "Jelly Worms" were often a hot ticket! I guess they were the precursor to today's Gulp worms.
3 Way bucktailing in the Gut or the Race is actually more specialized than many folks think. Despite a solid bite yesterday, I actually changed sinker weights at least 3 times throughout the tide to make sure I had the correct presentation.
It is also true, those special bucktails have become...
Amazing how all it took was a change in temperature of only 2 degrees and 4 days’ time to turn on the Bass at Plum Gut!
On Monday’s trip my gauge never got above 50 degrees but this morning at 52 degrees I began fishing in a real pea soup fog with a positive attitude. Didn’t take long on the...
I have mentioned this before, but you are correct, Overbored. During the famous Weakfish runs of the 70's an 8# fish was not even considered exceptional. Many 10#+ fish were captured and my PB of 13.5# was caught on a whole sandworm one calm night near Jessups.
Then came the long drought but in...
Is this a joke? When is the last time anyone actually caught Yellowtail Flounder in the areas suggested, with perhaps the exception of Sandy Hook. In my experience our east end Flounder fishing collapsed over 20 years ago.
