Well after 10 days of dawn fishing trips, along with quite a few evenings too, along with the occasional mid-day run to boot, I finally shed the demons this evening with a 26". Today's dawn patrol was 1 brief hookup, along with another hit and a follow. I also dropped another one this evening...

We all have to start somewhere. Things will definitely be on the upswing for you soon, Roccus.
Enjoy the ride!

Stripah, it's what's for Suppah!!

After moaning and groaning about many fishless outings, most with not even seeing a hint of a striper, this morning turned out to be a pleasant surprise. When I hit the sack last night we were supposed to be having thunder storms at dawn, so I slept well, knowing there wasn't a chance of fishing this AM. When I got up at 04:30, there was no rain, no wind and just fog, my optimal bass conditions, so I was intrigued, but still not wanting to venture out.

As soon as the 5:00 News Weatherman said the coast was clear, both literally and figuratively until around 07:00, which was just about my time limit regarding water at my dock, I hitched up my pants and went out, not expecting much, but superior to hanging around here wasting time. My low expectations were met as first, as there were no signs of fish as I went to drift one, a 300 yd drift out of a cove with a fresh water runoff. As I was getting to the end of a long undisturbed drift, I questioned my sanity in going out, but what else is new?

What I figured to be one of my last casts prior to trying another spot, I lost control of it and the sinking popper I use, CC Striper Strike, sank below the surface before I could start popping it. There I was cranking and convulsing like Joe Cocker trying regain control of my popper, and just before the plug made its way to the surface, there was splash and I was onto a beautiful slot fish that was destined for our dinner tonight. Went back on that drift, but more of the usual nothing...

I had one more drift between me and the dock so I took it, and once again as I was nearing the end of a drift there seemed to be a "disturbance in the Force" on what was supposed to be my last cast. Fired another one out there and BAM, another slot fish!! Unhooked, set her free, and went up tide for another "last drift", but like the first spot, there was no further action.

So it was a very successful morning for this year, 2, 28" fish boated and a fish for the table, a definite win for the home team!!

Looks beautiful and delicious, Roccus! And congrats on your perseverance.

The first fresh Bass dinner of any season is always a special event.

My 115 HP Fish Finder!!
Fishing has oscillated between cold and lukewarm, got skunked Sunday, and was unable to fish yesterday. I reluctantly headed out this AM, because of continued poor reports from learned colleagues, and the fact that it was high tide, my least favorite tidal phase. Headed over to where the river tumbles down into the salt, figuring the heavy rain this spring would provide a decent drift on an absolutely windless morning. Took one long drift and the only thing that disturbed the water surface was my popper.

Gave up on that place and headed into the narrows of a long, narrow, shallow cove figuring I would be ambushing any fish entering or exiting the cove. After 20 min of nothingness, neither on my line nor anything swimming disturbing the glass-like water surface of the 4' deep cove, I decided to move the boat 20' and the second the engine fired up, a pod of large bass 10' directly in front of the boat took off!! I had no clue there were any fish in the cove!!

BTW, I NEVER have my sounder on in shallow water as I have more than one instance of fish being disturbed by it. I challenge anyone who debates that to turn on their CHIRP or Side Scanning units and dive under the boat. Sounds like the clicking of a pod of sperm whales, doesn't it? If you can hear it, imagine what the bass' lateral line picks up!!

Be that as it may, whatever I did, it "activated" the fish and suddenly I could see 3 pods of fish swimming around the cove. Well, time to select a pod and pounce. I target the nearest one and when they were within range I lobbed a cast just ahead of their path. Well that went over like a loud fart in Church, as the fish spooked and ran the other way. Yes, I was cursing Poseidon, St. Peter, and any other deity/apostle/demon involved with fishing at a considerable volume.

OK, note to self: no close casts, so I was more discreet with the next group and lobbed one further away. As soon as I popped the lure, I noticed the pod change direction and to head straight for my popper. First a swirl, but no hit, then a hit with a brief hookup, yes the loud diatribes began anew, then right at the boat, another fish inhaled the plug and it was game on!! Backed way off the drag to let the extremely pissed off fish to get his ya-yas out, allowing me to get a net under a nice 28" striper. I quickly unhooked him and gratefully returned him to the water. Played with a few more pods with no luck, but at least Pepe LePew was averted this morning!!

Well, the On Again/Off Again pattern continues. Total skunk yesterday with the fish having their way with me. When I finally found some, there were swirls, follows, (one time the wake behind the plug was reminiscent of a submarine), and a single quick hookup.

At least it got me motivated enough to drag my azz out bed early this morning, and excited to hookup on my first cast, but it was short-lived as the fish fell off, having me screaming!! Fired off a second cast and BAM, fish on!! This one stayed on and I landed a 27" fish, which was followed by a "blunt" of 26" bass with a belly full of alewives and HUGE shoulders.

Then the action slowed down a bit, but I saw a pod swimming a cast length away, and I lofted a cast in the right place as the pod altered course and my plug disappeared, followed by a bass splashing around the surface before taking a long, sustained run. That one was 28" and returned to fight another day.

Total action time was like 25 minutes, so I was home with a cup of coffee 35 minutes after I left.

Seven Day Report: 7 Fishing Trips, June 6-14

The fishing continues to be sporadic and frustrating, so exasperating that I've sat out some days because it just didn't seem worth it to go out. The past week started with 6 consecutive skunkings, an absolute incomprehensible concept in June prior to 2025.

Ended the Skunk Spree symbolically on Friday the 13th with a 27" fish, and kept the new streak going yesterday, adding a 25" fish. Not sure how much longer I can keep the success streak going, but enjoying the ride.

Persistence and confidence in one's ability are often rewarded. You have both of those attributes, Roccus, in spades!!

OK, I'm going to whine, but this is driving me to considering golf. Partially self-inflicted in that I keep such detailed records and I knew that when I look at year over year it wouldn't be pretty...

How Bad Is It This Year??? It's a Fucking Disaster!!!

Today, after my 4th consecutive skunk in the past 4 days, with all fishing done at optimal tidal conditions, I reluctantly decided to look at my results vs last year, which overall, was my worse year since 2015 in terms of numbers.

Well this year is going to be a total disaster based on that; I had caught over 1/2 my total number of fish for the 2024 season by June 18, 2024. My numbers this year are 87% LOWER than last year on this date!!

The south shore of Long Island Suffolk/ Nassau border there is probably the worst fluke fishing for this time of year. There are fish to west towards Brooklyn Area and fish East from Shinnecock east . Nothing much happening in between. Last year this time we had fish 🤷‍♂️

The bays by me have been dismal. Had a good bass run earlier, nothing like last year and much shorter. If you want to grind it out dragging live bait all day, then there are some fish around. Heard of a few really husky fish. Otherwise it has been poor. Going to start calling trips "practice with the fly rod", hoping for a bump.
