I ventured to the south shore yesterday on my friend Joe's boat for what has been a hot fluke bite. Beautiful weather, slow drift, light sinkers and constant action. plain gulp worked best (a first for me), but fish kept biting off the tails, so fluke ribbon or squid filled in for part of the...

They can take the lead, but they can't hold the lead. And that's the most important part! apologies to Seinfeld.

    Stolen Fish

I'm chunking for bass in Hempstead Harbor a few weeks ago (July). A rod goes off, I lock the reel and the fight ensues. It heads for the surface as many large bass do. In the midst of this tug of war, I notice a seal head poking out of the water looking at me. My first inclination was: "look, a...

What to bring on my Nantucket Shoals Trip Next Week

You are usually not fishing on sticky bottom, so there's less concern with losing an expensive rig.

I remember my dad taking a deep breath, then reluctantly shelling out the big bucks for our Penn Long Beach. Still works, but the drag is inconsistent. Prob was never ever serviced.

    Sunscreen

Are you sure? The FDA requires sunscreens to maintain their effectiveness for 3 years. I learned quite a bit about sunscreen chemistry in a patent infringement case for Coppertone and I don't know why a sunscreen's chemicals, if the bottle is kept in a cabinet, would deteriorate over time. But...

    Scallops in the GSB

There's about 7 times as many people living on Long Island than there should be, flushing their toilets, fertilizing their lawns, paving over marshes and bogs, putting sea walls on the shoreline, etc.

    Only in Maine

I believe public nudity is legal in Maine. As a kid, we went to northern Maine each August. It was not until we would take a day trip to Canada that there was anything a teenage boy would be eager to ogle at.

    Chancey Charters Bass

Excellent eeling with Captain Hugh Chancey in Montauk. We started with light's out diamond jigging for sea bass, keeping 3. Also cod, porgies, mackerel, sea robins, bluefish, and a 16" blackfish. Once the tide turned, out came the eels, and we had hookups on almost each drift, with fish pushing 40#

    Chancy Charters

Diamond jigging is a fun way to catch bass, especially when they're mostly overs. Hugh Chancy put us on the fish to 30+ pounds, including a slot limit and too many thrown back to keep track of. Unfortunately, the most exciting catch of the day turned out to be a 20# bass foul hooked right behind...

    Sand eel City

I had to see for myself. Shout out to Phil at Cow Harbor for helping with the where and the what. His advice was spot on. So I made the trek all the way to Smithtown Bay and the reports are accurate. Once we found the sand eels, we found the fluke. As many fluke as we wanted. Only one keeper...

How to catch the attention of striped bass gorging on sandeels?

That was my frustration yesterday. I tried diamond jigs (yo-yo and swum), 1/2 oz spro sand eel pattern, 3" white popper, swim bait. Nothing.
