    Western Sound Blackfishing 2019

Hi Benny I grew up fishing the western sound through the 70's and 80's. Speaking with one of my old fishing buddies from the same area the other day and told him I picked a few macks. We started talking about the macks being so thick in the western sound the Sheepshead Bay fleet would travel up...

    Western Sound Blackfishing 2019

Last trip of the year on Tuesday 11-26. Great weather, 60 degrees. Sound was very flat, Fished the Port Jeff area on Tuesday. Moon tide made anchoring and holding bottom at adventure. Had only one good blackfish hit on a green crab. After that nothing for about 3 hours hours. Surprise of the...

Assembly Passes Brianna's Law to Require Boating Safety & Make New York's Waterways a Safer Place

Boat Guy-Teachers/Instructors only teach the curriculum. We try to teach them the proper way to do things on board any vessel or watercraft (canoe, kayak. Jet Ski ect.) Many people still don't wear seat belts like they were taught in driver ed or for the permit exam. I can't correct stupid...

How is the fishing in the Long Island Sound?

You never know about the fall until it gets here. If some bunker( or sand eels/spearing) move in and stay, that is a great sign. Fish will follow or find the food. Last fall was nothing special. There were plenty of albies around if you wanted to chase them. Blues were scare but around. I don...

The second year of the largest artificial reef expansion in New York State history

Seems the DEC always forgets about the Smithtown reef. We got a small addition last year but the bulk always seems to go to the South Shore.

How is the fishing in the Long Island Sound?

I fish the Port Jeff/Mt Sinai/ Stony Brook area weekly. The fishing has been poor at best. Fluke were very slow. I had one keeper this year. Porgies are hit and miss. Some days better than others. Fished from Port Jeff to Cranes Neck and into Smithtown. A few small porgies and sea bass. The...

    Weekend Boating Accidents

Brianna's Law has been passed by the NY State Senate and NY State Assemble. The bill is awaiting the governor's signature. No way to know if it would have prevented an accident or not. We certainly don't have all the facts on the either accident.

    Weekend Boating Accidents

You are required to maintain a proper lookout at all time the vessel is underway-to avoid collisions. If the Captain is the only one aboard he also needs to be aware of his/her surroundings. When I have no-one aboard I am constantly watching my surroundings, side to side and behind. to check for...

    Weekend Boating Accidents

Pequa 1 as you know, I teach Boating Safety for NY State. Negligence is hard to overcome no matter how much education is required. The Moriches accident has me asking, Where were the required lookouts? Lookouts are required at all times a vessel is underway. Three people on board and no-one...

Fish ID taken in the sound.

Pequa 1. No keeper Fluke off Port Jeff today. I only had one keeper so far this year. They seem to be getting smaller not bigger. The good news is not many sea robins either. Catch of the day was a large Porgy, about 17 inches caught at Middle Grounds.

Assembly Passes Brianna's Law to Require Boating Safety & Make New York's Waterways a Safer Place

The reason for the five year window is in part, there would be too many people to certify in one year. If you remember when Suffolk County passed a similar law(which was over-ridden by NY State) no one considered the amount of people that needed to be certified. I am an instructor for the NY...

Our Fragile Long Island Sound Fishery

Agreed. The sound has been very "quiet" so far this year. Not that last year was all that great either. Enjoyed your comments about years back. I have been fishing the Port Jeff area since the Mid 80's and it has slowly declined every year. I remember the Mack attacks in May and June. No macks...
