Last night I fished the bridge in foggy windy conditions until sunrise this morning. I went home, slept and woke to find messages on my phone inquiring about my wellbeing because a kayak with a bass still attached to it washed up in Shinnecock inlet this morning.
Like I said. I know how it ends.
At Ponquogue it went from lights-out fishing to slim pickings, then back to a solid bite again - with a little chaos mixed in - all in a span of about 5 days. How's that for a report? I'll call it hit-or-miss. The fishing was great until a surge of newbies and out-of-towners arrived and really...
He was, which made me wonder how he could have overlooked the obvious need for lighting at night, if for no other reason than to see what you're doing. Interestingly, however, I was working near Tiana Bay and watched a guy outfitted for fishing, by himself, and without a PFD.
So much can go...
It's not surprising that this holiday weekend brought an influx of fishermen to our East End's local spots. The pandemic alone had generated an increase in the number of folks populating the bridges, jetties, and waterways out here. I am surprised to see how ill-prepared many of them are for...
Have your fishing license and your parking permit or it will be an expensive trip. There are a lot of places to fish for those willing to look. It's a shame that the Canal would get crowded, but back in the day the Canal would have a hundred people there and everyone got along fine. For that...
I can only seem to Avoid the massive blue fish that have moved into the area by getting off the water at sunrise. There are still plenty of bass to be had but the vast majority seemed to be about 24 to 26".
In my experience, I'm doing better on the troll than the jig. Beautiful morning to be...
These days I'd be releasing them anyway, as I don't eat fish and there's just a one-fish limit. But you're exactly right: it can't be helping the survival rate to be laying it on my lap for 2-3 minutes each time while I get a picture.
Yes, I was definitely burned out by the end of last season's Striper Cup, but the experience enabled me to better gauge that line between "labor of love" and "labor." It's rarely a bright line, and that has been the epiphany for me: that there shouldn't be a "rule" about when to fish. Rather, it...
Half the team made it to Jamaica Bay for some striper action. "Pistol" Pete Kelly was the high hook with bass up to 34 inches. He had what they wanted, sand worms up in The Patch. I trolled up some smaller bass on deep-swimming lures and got two on a yellow popper when we were in the skinny...
I consider myself fortunate in a lot of ways, not the least of which is that most recently I am able to pursue my favorite activity largely unaffected by closures and personal distance restrictions. (Misfit Kayak Fishing Team has proudly been socially distant for over a decade now ?.) Anyway...
Important Update: I drove out to fish J-Bay from Floyd Bennett Field yesterday and found that they had closed the park on Monday. We were able to park outside a gated lot and still fish, but the kayak launch by the Cross Bay Blvd and the kiteboarding launch across from it were both closed and so...
I drove out to Jamaica Bay 2 days ago when it was too windy and I could see birds and fish crashing bait. So I came back yesterday for the same morning tide and had my best day yet, numbers wise, in Jamaica Bay. I even had my first keeper of the season. Most of the fish were 24 to 26 in and fat...
I spend a lot of time on the beach. I've been regularly driving on LI East End beaches for over 25 years. Three times a day, every day (that it doesn't snow.) You're right, everyone gets stuck. I've been stuck four times, but I've probably pulled 60 or 70 people off the beach over those 25 years...
Wanted to post a pic of one of Pete's bass. There were bass to 36" taken that January afternoon. This one looks close to keeper-sized. Soft white plastics (jigged slow), light tackle, tons of fun.
Because I kept track recently, I know that the most trips I made in any one season was 78 fishing trips, and a few of those included multiple locations (Mtk, Shin. Inlet, Ponq Br.) in one trip. This season I was fishing with a purpose and it's been about 70 trips so far and I'll be fishing into...
I might be twisting this into a Kayak Fishing Forum topic, but I had the opportunity to have my father's 26-foot Colombia, a Hampton Boat Works custom inboard with full electronics, a tuna door, cockpit controls at the gunwall (because, like me, he often fished at ridiculous hours by himself)...
