The Missing Fish
198 fish went into the study. 198 fish came out alive.
So where did 9% come from?
In 1996, the Diodati study caught and released 198 striped bass in an artificial pond. Eight weeks later, they drained the pond completely dry. Every single fish they recovered was alive. Not one...
Ironically, I met a guy in the supermarket the other day that was on that boat. He told me that they're as good as Peconics and that they are catching good numbers of them.
I know him well and knew this was coming. I had one of my more memorable days fishing with him last year. It was Sept 10 and there we were fishing along side of the Statue of Liberty. An amazing site and experience.
With all due respect my good friend it is a published study. It was published in Marine and Coastal Fisheries, Volume 16, Issue 5, in September 2024. That’s a peer-reviewed journal of the American Fisheries Society.

That’s it. That’s the number. Two.
For thirty years, the entire Atlantic coast striped bass recreational fishery, a multi billion dollar industry and a way of life for millions, has been managed based on the ghosts of fish that never died. But it all started with two. Two small, 13 inch striped...
You raise some fair points, but I think there’s some confusion here that needs clearing up.
First, the 521 fish study (Dinkelacker et al.) was never designed to replace the 9% mortality rate. That study measured how quickly fish recover their reflexes after being caught. It tracked fish for 20...
@OVERBORED
I tried that approach once and stepped aside to let it play out. Next thing you know, a saltwater license was knocking at our door. I picked up the phone, called a few old friends, and we stopped it cold. These days, I focus on fights that actually have a chance of being won...

Roccus, you’re defending a 1996 study where they caught fish and then trucked them for two hours to another location before measuring mortality. You want to talk about flawed methodology? Let’s talk about that.
I’ve been pushing for a new catch and release study for years because I always knew...

The Critical Variable: Air Exposure
The study's most significant finding was the direct correlation between air exposure and recovery time. The results were stark:
FIG 2.0: PHYSIOLOGICAL IMPACT OF AIR EXPOSURE VS. SUBMERSION

I've Been Saying This All Along: Recreational Anglers Deserve an Apology
The data is finally in, and it proves what we've known for years—we were never the problem.
For over a decade, recreational striped bass anglers have been treated like criminals. We've endured slot limits, bag restrictions...
There's a lot of data so I launched a website to deliver it at Striped Bass Mortality Analysis . AI makes is easier to do it this way.
We don't have discussions there yet, as I'm working on a unified log in for the sites/apps (websites will soon be more of an app then a site) we are developing...
