2019 Trout Stocking?

Sorry if I offend anyone, but is it just me that thinks fish stocking for the main purpose of having those fish caught absurd?? I can understand stocking to get a sustainable, self-reproducing population established, but this regular "resupplying the shelves for catching" seems so foreign and futile; just one step away from "shooting fish in a barrel".

Guess it's why fresh water fishing never tickled my fancy and catching a native, brook trout is on my "Fishing Bucket List". Maine has quite a few places that can make that happen.

I think it’s a great way to get people involved in the sport and an excellent early season option after a long cold winter.

All valid points. It would be great to get the bodies of water stocked to the point where the fish populations will reproduce on their own and stocking can taper off, but in our area the chances of that happening are slim to none. Not because of the law abiding anglers, but because of those that have no respect for the law just a sense of entitlement.

belmont is getting some fish today.the big stocking for thr festival is done the day before.ps belmont has been stocked a number of times this past fall and winter from the parks dept
Nice ! They did winter stockings? Never seen that before....Cool to know....! Any other lakes in the chain or just Belmont? Seems like the other lakes are only getting the "stream" boost, not the lakes....

I get it.. when I was at Belmont while they were stocking it did feel like cheating. Sure I caught fish and it was fun but they did just dump a cooler full of fish right in front of me. It is what it is though I just like getting out there and putting a bend in the rod.

Its a put and take stocking program. It would be nice if the fish were off limits for a few days ,like many states do.I kind of miss the whole opening day thing on long island I mean april 1st waskind of like christmas.Stil have a ittle of it with southaven park.I personaly get no thrill out of catching trout I just dumped out of a bucket, some people do .The whole lets hope a native population establishes will never hapen in any of the lakes we stock with the exception of Deep pond and Laural lake they seem to hold over there.Once the water temps climb to 72 deg the rainbows will perish the brown trout at about 75deg. these hatchery trout do not even seam to last to long in most of the long island streams we stock that have optimal conditions for them to exist. still can not firgure that one out yet they just do not holdover from one season to the next. These itte 3 to 8 inch native brookies we have have what it takes to survive as long as take care of there habitats.Ruccos 7to me chasing little native brookies up in gods country weather it be New york or longisland or any place else in pristine headwaters and holding one of those little jewels in my hand tells me everything is still allright.

Fluker how are ya? yes belmont state park started their fall and winter stocking program this past year but it is only in the park .Carlls river ,southards pond and argyill still get the DEC stocking as usual.

I was at Massapequa Reservoir yesterday on a beautiful day. It is more like a park. Joggers, people on bicycles going around trails surrounding the park. People walking dogs and families walking. and best of all families fishing together. some moms, mostly dads with young sons and daughters from 4 to teen size all fishing for trout. This alone is reason enough for stocking trout IMHO. For me GOD, blue skies and the water were plenty enough. Even saw 2 ospreys fishing for trout as well:)CIAO, John.

You don't have to go to Maine, plenty of native brook trout in the Adirondacks.

Nice one .The conny breeders are the rainbows one of them was a little over 10lbs.Those big browns are from upstate the biggest one i have seen caught so far is 11lbs and change. That was a little over 29inches. There was close to 100 of them put in there.
