294lb grouper

So when you're done taking pictures and beating on your chest...........................

Anyways, sorry about the rant...

I always wonder how many anglers has a fish like that busted off in its lifetime?

My friends & I have had Goliath groupers near 300lb when fishing Gulf wrecks with Two Conchs Charters out of Marathon, FL. They grabbed everything we hooked. Gags, grunts, yellowtails, lane & mangrove snappers were gobbled up before we could get them to the boat. We'd yell "upgrade" when the drag started screaming. All you can do is try to break it off. Occasionally, we get the fish back nearly scaled. We'd then break out the stand up tackle and try to get a Goliath off the wreck. It worked on fish from 50 to near 300lbs. They're protected so you're not supposed to take them out of the water. Lotsa' fun though.

Goliath and Warsaw grouper are 2 different fish.

Goliath grouper are more of a nuisance now than anything else. Too many of them. Can be a real PITA when targeting other species.....

It was a grouper story. I noted the species in my post. I am aware that they are 2 different species.
I was just passing on a story. I thought that's what this site was all about.

That is what this site is about. I just happen to be down in SW Florida and that fish is the talk of the town! I spend way too much time BS'ing with the locals here. They really do give a lot of info.

Yes, I understand its a Grouper story and Thank you for sharing.

Just trying to point out that catching a 300# Goliath is much easier, less challenging than catching a 300# Warsaw.

Goliaths get big because they're protected. You can feed them by hand in some places.
Warsaws get big because of where they live and what they do when they're hooked!

Just thought a clear distinction needs to be made between the 2.

Not my intention to offend or insult. Apologies if I did. Mea Culpa!

I've caught both species and they are very different. Just wanted to clarify
