Albies in the Sound

After the heat of summer has past and things begin to wake up again in the sound there’s nothing I enjoy more than targeting albies. My favorite go-to for them is. 3/4 ounce deadly dick tied to 10-lb floro. Over the years you find where they tend to be, and it’s always around bait, which there certainly has been no shortage of.

I look for signs of them and then kinda follow them around casting to spots I see them chasing bait. I’ve been fairly successful at it but I feel I could be doing better. I have never hooked one on the blind though, only those that are seen breaking. Any tips on how to catch them after the go down would be appreciated.

Either way, for me, they are the greatest fighting fish in the sound.

Got in on the albie south shore run this year and had a blast.
Will start looking for them in the sound more.

Mid October last year, my son and I started off at Milford point and headed towards New Haven harbor, we saw them twice, both times they were moving very fast, when these fish are on the move, forget about it.
We threw everything at them, epoxy jigs, deadly dicks, abli snacks, they were not interested.
This year will be different.

Pay attention to where they breach. They will show again and again in same spot over time.
Cast where they'll be, not where they are. Like mentioned above, there speeding.
They see outstanding and when not on larger bait like peanut bunker. They become picky.
Try these. They come in every flavor, not cheap but when they run a promo (Hogy) we stock up. The past two seasons the bay anchovies they were feeding on were equivalent to 5/8oz size.

I have dozens of those, from 5/8 oz to over 1 oz.
I have caught more false albi's than I care to remember, just not in the sound.
I appreciate your advice and will put it to good use.

Not in the sound but in the ocean we used to troll for them with little metal jigs tied to 6lb test.

Mike,we used Jap feathers, jet heads for school blue fin off of Block Island and butter fish hole, albies were just a by product, but a good indication that the bigger tuna were around.
