April 2nd, 3 day fishing trip to Dry Tortuga’s aboard the American Patroit

I know you've done this trip and I'm down there at that time but I hear good and bad about it. What kind of fish is it? Is it like 200-300 ft? That's what I'm hearing.

All different types of groupers, snappers, plus Cobia, Wahoo, Blackfin Tuna, etc., it’s quite a mixed bag. The area is not heavily fished.

Depth?? I don’t recall anything 300’ mostly 150’ - 200’ as I recall on the Dry Tortuga’s. I have a call into their office to confirm depths. The Pulley Ridge trips are much deeper and electric reels are used a lot. Even the Dry Tortuga’s trips some people use electric.

It’s not really a “3 day trip”. I think the boat leaves around 3:00- 4:00pm and steams until about 10:00pm. You fishing the remaining 2 hours of that day, the next 24 hours, and the boat leaves around 2:00am on the third day. So you get about 28 hours of fishing time. Rest whenever you want, the bunk area is clean and comfortable, and kept at 68 degrees. Clean showers too. They feed you good, 3 squares, snacks, and soda machine and self serve soft ice cream 24/7. The boat is clean, and comfortable.

Last question. What kind of fish do you bring home? That's what my Midwest friends down there are gonna ask.

I can’t tell you exactly because as you know the fishery regulations down there are always changing as to what you can keep. I’m not sure if they have the regs out for 2027.

That said, many different species of Snapper, same for Grouper. Blackfin Tuna, Cobia, Wahoo should all be on the menu as well as different Pompano, including African. I’m probably missing some fish but suffice to say there is usually no problem catching many desirable great eating species.

There are boat limits on some species. Cobia and African Pompano come to mind. Those 2 fish have, or had on the trips I’ve been on, a 2 fish boat limit.

The American Patriot called me back. Water depths are up to 300’, but he said they mostly fish in 150’ to 200’-220’. The shallower water is at night and the deeper during the day. Red Snapper will not be on the menu that’s usually a June through October/November fishery. Amberjack will probably not be on the menu either but, me personally, I don’t want any Amberjack. All different kinds of Grouper are available. I think we had some Mahi on the last trip too.
