Snuck out a couple nights ago to see if the bass invaded our local waters with the new moon. They are definitely here! Equipped with about a dozen eels, we drifted them using 3-4 oz sinkers and 7/0 circle hooks.
It started off pretty slow with the tide just changing, but once it started to speed up our fortunes changed, we drilled 7 bass to 36" in a little over an hour before we decided to call it quits.

All in all a pretty good start to the fall run, will give it another shot next week.

Deeper into the season I would drift eels during the day everybody would tell me you can't use eels in the daylight while I would catch fish after fish

sorta the same thing - I predominately floated eels in the Nissequogue all through the summer & into Fall - they were always productive....

Eels during the daytime, Mitch? I'm shocked the Bluefish didn't empty your bait well quickly.

I hate eels!

When I mated, I'd tell the customers to keep the eel in the water when we would run back up on the drift. Like clockwork, 6 guys would reel in and forget what I told them resulting in an eel ball on deck. 6eels, hooks and leaders all in a ball that I'd just have to cut off and start over.

I still have nightmares.........lol

OMG , I can totally picture that and understand why you feel that way
I'm sure we've all had that happen o occasion with 1 eel but i can't imagine having to deal with that times 6

I did not mean to imply I caught a bass on eels on every drift during the day time LOL

And also, when it was one of those bluefish days I would usually learn my lesson after the 2nd or 3rd eel got attacked and then just switch over and try to get some blues for the smoker....

We sure have some healthy-looking bass around here! You don't see as many anglers today targeting them with eels. Absolutely my favorite way to catch bass! There is a true knack to it that takes us all a while to grasp, but once you get it, there's nothing better.
