Blackfish Again

Kona

Angler
Took a trip on the Elizabeth II with Capt Paul Bruno yesterday and he put us on them as usual. Steady pick of fish with a few keepers on the first drop, quick re anchor and a better pick of keepers as the tide slowed. Half Mile move in anticipation of changing tide and increasing breeze and it was on! Fish to 9 lbs and a couple of cod and some true jumbo c bass to a legitimate 5 lbs. ended up with a boat limit of both and 2 cod with a 15 lb cod lost close to the boat. Great trip Again.

Paul is as good as it gets! Fished with him for years.
On my winter layup periods, Paul is the guy I will always fish with. He is tops!

I also had the honor of meeting his wife last spring while I was running a kid's camp trip on the Orient Star. I notice this one lady was actually more skilled than the mate working deck that day. I approached her to compliment her on her skills and she informed me of her "very close relationship" with a certain Paul Bruno out of Montauk! :)

Took some doing to get on the spot , tide with a cross wind with a leftover SW windswell from the day before but with some wiggling it worked well. Nice to see some cod!!
Last few years had better shot of cod as a by catch while blackfishing than actually fishing for them in Jan-Feb.

So much good bottom South of Block.....

I have had the same observation. Just prior to the last several years the pattern seems to be an OK Cod bite round late December until February. Now even that is getting be a lot shorter. I really miss the days when I used to chase Cod with my own boat from early Spring to summer Coxes Ledge Trips to even a fall outing on occasion.

What a shame and a far cry from the times when I was a kid, and you could count on a decent Cod bite on the South shore by the middle to end of November. Some of the famous party boats at the time would advertise "Come and get your Saltwater Turkey"!

Really sad as I love eating fresh Cod.
