Blackfish rack rod

Let's hear a rack rod you would use for blackfishing the Orient and Fishers Island area so would be using 10+ oz at times for under $250. Thanks

I tried to edit but my 30 minutes was up. I have a BJ701 great up to 10oz but nothing after that. The amount of times I see myself using this ar the moment doesn't warrant a custom build. Was thinking of the Nexus H but have to check it out next time I'm in Jersey. After that haven't thought of anything but I'm sure there's several options out there. Thanks

I like the top one. ugly stik bigwater combo

I built the Blackhole Challenger 701M, Jigging World Black Demon 7.5M and MH. I fish tog from the Northfork to Block Island and love them all. If price is an issue then either Black Demon will do the job well.

Running around today stopped by and saw the Nexus H in a spiral wrap. Rated 2-6 oz seemed a little light for the purposes but I'll stop out when I'm in the road with a reel this week and drop a 10 oz on it see how it feels.

The Nexus series is a much thinner walled blank and much lighter in weight than the Black Demon series. Price of the Nexus is $130 and the Black Demon $250.

See? Ya just gotta ask a man that knows. Not like that Leprechaun guy! :p
Hi Pete,

I have been building on both the Blackhole Challenger series and the Jigging World Black Demon and Black Widow series since they were first made available 5-7 years ago. I was always interested in playing with new stuff. My arsenal back then was primarily Calstar, CTS, Seeker and Lamiglas.

I was out last Friday on a Charter for tog and sea bass on a very nautical day. We stayed close to Montauk in the AM and slammed the tog. I started with 12 ounces on both the Challenger 731M and the Black Demon 7.5M. When the tide slackened I switched to a light spinner built on a Black Widow 120 using a 2 ounce homemade tog jig. What a blast.

At 10:30 we steamed to south of the windmills off Block Island and did a number on jumbo sea bass. Again started with 12 ounces and finished using the spinner and a 2 oz. lead head with a 6-inch plastic curly tail. You would flip it up tide and count to fifty as it settled in 80 feet. When you got to 35 the jig was attacked by jumbo sea bass twenty feet from the bottom. Fun stuff.

They have an XH of which I have 2 for Fishing off of Block Island and surrounding area's , they can handle 10+ oz with no problem, I have them matched with saltiga 15's.

Joe I have a nexus 7"Nexus xh if you want take it on a trip this season Your welcome too do so.Don't ask me how it performs as I never used it.Its more of a loaner rod for freinds and family when Nantucket fluking.

Go with the Nexus 7’ XH over the 7’ H for 10+ lead. I used my 7’ Nexus XH paired with a low profile Okuma Komodo 364P spooled with 30# brain in RI this past weekend and it performed very well. Makes for great lightweight set up for weight and bait toggin.

Good topic
I needed one for the exact same thing and area so in early October I went to J&H Tackle to bend some rods. . I looked at the Black Hole 731 which many Tog enthusiasts swear by. Then one of the salesman took me to see their house version of that same rod which is a Dark matter 731 . It’s an acid wrapped and it came in at $239 . I liked the way the rod felt over the more expensive black hole ($385) offering. I bought it And I used it in Montauk/Block Island/ Fishers and hung up to 12oz on it. 8-10oz handled with no problem. I love the rod and it performed flawlessly. J&H made thsee rods after the BH challenger bank rods. They even used the same numbers and lengths. They have a 701 L and I believe a 691 UL. I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Btw …I own a Blackhole rod as well, they make great rods!
My friend borrowed my setup while fishing and loved it and he now has one too paired with a Daiwa Saltist 15H on it.
I paired mine with a Maxel Hybrid 20 that I had. It’s a super light setup , no problem slinging this all day long. I will post a pic soon
good luck
