Blowfish and more BLOWFISH!

I finally got a weather window this week (thursday) to splash the boat. My grandson and I launched from Forge river and fished Moriches bay. I headed west to Smith's Pt bridge and we cast plugs by the piljngs hoping for Bass or Bluefish, no go. Headed back east and drifted the narrows (Buoy 8-10) with fluke on our minds. We used bucktails with gulp and the water was so clear we watched the blowfish destroy our trailers. Tried using otter tails instead of the gulp by couldn't buy a fluke. I gave in after an hour or so, through the anchor, dropped the chum pot and caught a bucket load of blowfish. My grandson was happy and I suppose thats what really matters. All the blowfish this year will make it difficult to use any fresh bait or gulp. We'll see how it pans out.

May have to rely on bucktails with plain unscented plastics and lots of wrist flexing... Then again I have some really small plastics and those blowfish will eat anything and are sooooo yummy !

When I was a kid my Father would take me to Pops fishing station in Seaford we would rent a skiff and go fishing for Fluke.We used to catch tons of blowfish they are still my favorite fish to eat.

This year I have to make myself stop trying for the occasional keeper fluke and just go for the scrumptious little things, off the kayak or not ! Stay safe !

Just curious. Last year lost many Gulp tails to them. Do they hug the bottom or will they "rise to the occasion" and hit lures or bait like fluke and weaks ? Unless I actually target them I would like to avoid them like I do with the birds by not using bait.

They will come off the bottom some i had them eat the hair off the buctails last year in moriches litterally gave the bucktails a trim. i said this before them tasty little buggers sell more Gulp than John Skinner

I started throwing them back when the fish box looked like a balloon festival. They were actually a real nice size 10" and lets just say if I didn't watch youtube for a novel way to skin them using a fork I doubt I've have much skin on my fingers . Lol Cooked up an awesome batch, flour, egg and breadcrumbs fried in oil. Lovely fish drumsticks. They are very tasty.

I loaded up on Sunday.. over 100 blowfish to 10". 2 of us kept about 30 each of the jumbos.

I tried last year for the first time and they just kept stealing my bait, guess I will have to research how to catch the little buggers.
But I’m willing to take advise??

small hooks, small baits. (hell, they used to bite on cigarette butts in the 70s !) once you got some chum going it seems like the guys I watched last year doing it just jigged up and down like for winter flounder. The few I caught I got on Gulp while bucktailing for fluke.

We used to put on a small flounder hook and like you said any small bait.

Hold on Chevy I'll go ask my 10 yr old grandson, lol I actually was waiting to long, by the time I set the hook must often they had it down deep. my grandson told me to swing at the first tap and sometimes even if you dont feel a hit. If you've got a chum pot down they apparently swallow your bait and just sit on it. He had over 50 himself so who was I to argue.
